Thumbs up to Falls Memorial Hospital officials, who Falls councilors reported will challenge the jurisdiction and authority of the U.S. Army Corps in dealing with wetlands issues regarding development of a new health care campus off Keenan Drive.
Councilors said the challenge will be to the Corps assertion that the property is adjacent to navigable waters.

Thumbs down
to police
Thumbs down to the police who held an Associated Press photographer on a gross misdemeanor riot charge after he was arrested while covering a protest in St. Paul. A second AP photographer reported being picked up from behind, thrown down and kicked in the ribs by police before being handcuffed. He was released after showing an officer his press credentials. A Democracy Now! TV and radio show host was also arrested. Police are charged with arresting those that disrupt the peace, but arresting journalists while they are covering an event and holding them on charges is overzealous.

Thumbs down to the small...

Back to page top

Thumbs down to the small town Daily Journal reporter who thinks he/she knew what it was like to work in that riot and criticized the police. The week was a sucess because of the police. No one was killed and minimal property damage (on a riot scale) occurred. Thousands of delegates and local civilians thanked police officers in the streets because they knew that they kept order for daily operation in the Twin Cities.

Unfortunately at this day in age, everyone "says" they are a reporter/journalist/photographer. If 1,000 anarchists are blocking the street (throwing fec*s, urine, rocks, etc at the police), there are also about 500 'so called' reporters in the street as well. The real reporters are peaceful even though they make it harder to move the anarchists off of the streets. The 'so called' reporters (just like anarchists) are there to entice police, commit a crime, and only show video of the police officers' reactions. Until you stand face to face to thousands of anarchists in 90 degree humid weather, while wearing riot gear, on hour 17 of working, on only 5 hours of sleep, while getting things thrown at you, then just stick to your local stories.
PS- Thumbs up to the many peaceful protestors that exercised their freedom of speech to try and make a difference in this world.

When facism rears its ugly...

When facism rears its ugly head -- and I am writing this on 9/11, the day that gave rise to the Patriot Act and which is leading to an acceptance by some, including d2k, of actions to control a free press. You will likely remember the stories of the TV reporters who were arrested at the DNC in Denver for taking video of pols meeting with tycoons. So the latest refusal to distinguish between reporters and rioters is dangerous. Even more dangerous is an opinion like that expressed above.

Without exception, the first act of totalitarian regimes is control of the free press. China. Cuba. South Korea. Nazi Germany. It's always the same and always leads to the same abuses. If the press is under siege by the police and is forced to withdraw, exactly who is it that tells us when police go over the line? Thanks to a free press, mainly the hated Seymour Hersh, we stopped Abu Ghraib.

If mistakes are to made with regards to the press, they must be made on the side of tolerance with regard to credentials. No rioter or group of rioters is more dangerous to our coutry than an abridgement of the free press.

Other than that, I have no particular opinion.
