Tall Shadows: Voices of Oberholtzer and Backus to resonate in unique Ranier presentation, By FAYE WHITBECK, Staff Writer

“Man is made for broad scenes and tall shadows.”
The words are Ernest Oberholtzer’s, the environmentalist and local lake dweller without whose efforts much of the northern lake country might now be flooded.
The phrase also provided the title for an artistic work which will be presented as a stage reading at the Ranier Community Building on Oct. 10, 11 and 12.
As part one of Jim Stowell’s Border Lakes Trilogy, “Tall Shadows” is a fictional prototype based on the duel between lumber magnate E.W. Backus and explorer, conservationist Oberholtzer.

County purchases armory building

Koochiching County will soon own the former National Guard armory building in International Falls. This week the U.S. Senate unanimously passed Rep. Jim Oberstar’s bill to transfer the property to county control. Pres. George Bush is expected to sign the bill in the next two weeks.
The armory is expected to be used mainly for county business, Commissioner Wade Pavleck said. The building has four garage bays, a conference room and a large enclosed yard, which will be used by the Sheriff’s Office and Highway Department, he said.

Hearings held for proposed power rate increase, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is considering a request by Minnesota Power to raise the rates of its 141,000 residential customers.
If approved, the increase would represent the first rate increase in 14 years for Minnesota Power. Company officials say the 9.7 percent increase would recover around $45 million worth of investments in renewable energy, plant and systems upgrades and cost of operations. The investments are in response to long-term production costs and state and federal mandates requiring the company to produce a quarter of its energy from renewable sources by 2025.

Wetland plan update scheduled

The International Falls City Council Monday is scheduled to hear an update on an effort to develop a comprehensive wetlands management plan.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Falls Municipal Building.
Dave Serrano, of Arro of the North LLC, will discuss the plan with the council.
