Thunder and Lightning were making themselves known, but the weather couldn’t have been better for a day at the farm.
“Thunder and Lightning” are the names of the shiny-feathered roosters at Wayne Meyer’s farm where about 300 area preschoolers and kindergartners made an annual spring field trip Thursday.
Likewise, “Olive and Orville,” a pair of orphaned 10-week-old lambs and “Lucy and Misty,” two powerful Clydesdale horses joined the geese, ducks, cows, sheep, chickens, rabbits and goats in a skeptical welcoming of the pie-faced children who lined their pens and fences.
Lucy and Misty pulled a wagon-load of kids down a dusty path while other youngsters patted the wool of baby lambs, the bristly hair of young goats and the fuzzy fur of rabbits in the sun-kissed barnyards outside of Littlefork on the Forsythe Road. Polish chickens shook their silly hat-like plumed heads as if to say “What the heck’s going on around here?”
Meyers and his wife Sharon have owned the farm since 1969 and having been hosting farm day for young children since 1980.
“My friends are doing all the hard work,” Meyers said. He was referring to “farmer helpers” such as Ray Kennedy, Reg Emmertt, Chet Mann and Bob Frederickson among others who were enjoying the day along with several of the kids’ parents.
