In celebration of its 75th anniversary, student scholarships to summer music camp have been announced by Tuesday Musicale.
Because of the support and generous contributions of the Borderland community — businesses, individuals, previous scholarship recipients and members — the club was able to award nine full scholarships to area music students, according to Tuesday Musicale members.
The music camps provide an opportunity for students to play or sing in large groups and small ensembles. In addition, they receive private instruction from the music faculty. Concerts and recitals are presented at the close of the camps and are open to the public.
Award recipients are as follows:
Falls High School: Jabari Prevost, alto saxophone; Judah Chezick, drums; Pat Dougherty, drums; Ethan Johns, tuba; and Therese Youso, piano student of May Ann Kalar; Indus High School: Blaine Freden, baritone; Taylor Patterson, saxophone; and Jonathon Doe, voice; Littlefork-Big Falls High School: Haylee Gates, voice.
Paige Boyum, scholarship winner in voice category in 2008, will also be attending music camp at University of Minnesota, Duluth, this summer, due to the cancellation of Bemidji State University’s Choral Camp last year.
The students named as alternates this year are: FHS — Nora Christensen, flute; Indus: Maria Lewis, xylophone and Molly Baldwin, clarinet; Littlefork — Kari Imhof, clarinet and Devon Miller, voice; and May Ann Kalar piano students: Abigayle Fincel and Andrea Fincel.
Alternates Nora Christensen and Maria Lewis will be attending camp this summer in place of Pat Dougherty and Blaine Freden, who are not able to participate.
High School exchange students from FHS and Indus also presented selections for the audition committee. They were Sebastian Schweiger, Austria, who played an original piano composition; and Tanya Lukina, Russia, who sang “Du Bist Bei Mir.”
BSU plays host to band, jazz band and piano camps this year on July 12 through 18. Directors are Del Lyren and Stephen Carlson.
UMD’s North Shore Summer Music Experience, directed by Mark Whitlock, is June 21-27.
Scholarship recipients and alternates will present a recital during the school year for Tuesday Musicale members and it is also open to the public.
Tuesday Musicale has been giving music awards since the club was organized in 1934. For 30 years, the Arion Award was presented to the outstanding music student at Falls High School. In 1964, the club began awarding scholarships to summer music camp. To date, 174 students have been recipients of these scholarships.
Auditions for scholarships are held in May and the winners are selected by the Tuesday Musicale audition committee. Committee members are Margarete Kostiuk, Mona Johnson, Sharalyn Schaak, Marcia Bringedahl and Florence Strukel, who report that the musical talent of area students is outstanding.
The number of students who audition grows every year. “Selecting recipients is a very difficult, but most rewarding experience,” say members of the committee, which was assisted by FHS music instructors Donna Belanger and Donna Frederickson; Indus music director Tom Belanger, L-BF music instructors Peter Kowitz and Michelle Boelk; and local piano instructor, May Ann Kalar.
