Canoe adventure

June 23, 2009 - 12:11pm

Erik Simula is seen here during his 1,000-mile trip across the waters of Minnesota in his birch bark canoe. He departed from Lake Superior on April 22 on what he calls the “Arrowhead journey.” Simula stopped at Island View Lodge on Rainy Lake two weeks ago and was connected with resident Charles Bergstedt, who took photos. Simula spent the night on Bergstedt’s homemade pleasure craft, the “Red, White & Blue.” Bergstedt said that boat building was just one thing that he and Simula had in common. Bergstedt said that while Simula was docked, he repaired his canoe with a birch bark torch and pitch. He travels with the repair kit. Simula was heading towards Gold Portage from Bergstedt’s island, on his way to Crane Lake, according to Bergstedt. Simula travels with his dog, “Kitigan,” who Bergstedt said is trained to protect his supplies while docked. For more photos, pick up today's edition of The Daily Journal. Contributed photo
