Incumbents file for school board

Two incumbents have filed for positions on the Falls School Board as of Thursday afternoon. Mark Lassila and Michelle Hebner have filed for 4-year terms. Three four-year positions, now held by Lassila, Robin Baumchen and Gerald Bolstad, are open for election in November and a two-year position, now held by Hebner, is also up for election.
Candidates who wish to file for the positions can do so in the office at Falls High School until Sept. 9.


Labor Day holiday travel reminder

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is reminding travelers planning trips across the border into the United States to make sure they have their proper documents and to anticipate heavy traffic during the celebration of the Labor Day holiday.


Lake levels dominate meeting

FORT FRANCES, Ont. — Area residents voiced concern Tuesday about the level of Rainy Lake this spring at the annual meeting of the International Rainy Lake Board of Control.
Newly appointed International Joint Commissioner Pierre Trepanier was on hand to greet board members and community at La Place Rendez-Vous.
The IJC requires both the IRLBC and the International Rainy River Water Pollution Board to hold the joint public forum. It is an opportunity for the board to present updates water levels, basin, flowage and pollution issues and hear feedback from the community.


Airport parking lot work nearly complete

The Falls International Airport may be losing its third daily commercial flight, at least from November through April, according to the International Falls-Koochiching County Airport Commission.
The cancellation could not be confirmed by either Northwest or Mesaba Airline, however, the commission secretary Susan Baratono said Wednesday that scheduling for the third flight does not appear during those months. She believes the end of summer schedule flights in combination with high fuel prices brought the cancellation.


Evelyn Trompeter

Services for Evelyn Trompeter, Ranier, Minn., were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, International Falls. Evelyn passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, Friday, Aug. 22, following her long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 79 years of age.
Pastor Stephen Olson officiated services. Music was performed by Lori Ann Fouts, Jerrod Shermoen and Joe Belanger.
Lectors were Beth Shermoen, Wendy Blackman, Rachel Olson and Sara Olson.
Eulogists were Brian Blackman and Jerrod Shermoen.


Helen Theresa Wajgel, 90

Helen Theresa Wajgel, Loman, Minn., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Littlefork Medical Center, Littlefork, Minn. Helen was 90 years of age.
Born Nov. 15, 1917, in Beaver Dam, Wis., she later moved north and settled in Loman.
She was united in marriage to Louie Wajgel in 1974.
She was a homemaker and attended Zion Lutheran Church in International Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Slenczaka and Theresa Bernice Pczyba.
Helen is survived by her loving husband, Louie, and her step-son, Steven Kling of Milwaukee, Wis.


Charlotte Ann Ruelle, 67

Charlotte Ann Ruelle, age 67, of International Falls, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 at her home.
She was born May 19, 1941, at International Falls, where she had resided all her life.
The former Charlotte Ann Roeder was united in marriage to Daniel Ruelle Aug. 3, 1957, in International Falls. They were happily married for 38 years before his death in 1995.
Charlotte enjoyed puzzles, bingo, playing cards, listening to music, and taking her weekend excursions by car with her husband.

International Falls Police Department 

Theft: Two thefts were reported at Can-Am Fisheries, 22 22nd St., Tuesday. Cement, valued at $1,500, and construction material, value unknown, was reportedly taken. 

Property damage: James E. Jessop reported Tuesday that renters at 1714 Seventh Ave. had put holes in the walls, causing $800 in damage.
