In defense of Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Filed under:

No votes yet

An injustice has recently been done to a black man.
Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who used to be Barak Obama's pastor, spoke to the National Press Club on April 28. He has been vilified for his remarks. Obama has denounced him.
And it’s not fair. Mr. Wright didn't say anything wrong. Every single TV news clip I've seen of it has been taken out of context. Edited for shock value.
To hear what he actually said go to: minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/programs/midday.

In the matter of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, I feel that the press and Barack Obama have it right and that our letter writer is too generous. The speech Rev. Wright spoke was riveting and well delivered but the subsequent arrogant question and answer performance unmasked this man for what he is: a man drowning in anger and resentment. Easy enough for a white guy to say, so I turn instead to the late playright August Wilson whose most famous play, Fences, was done a few years ago in the Guthrie. It revolves around a man named Troy Maxon whose anger at real racial injustices he incurred in his youth causes him to lash out at his son, who is about to get a sports scholarship. The need to lash out, to imagine that the wrongs committed against him are forever part of the family legacy is exactly what the Reverend is doing to Barack Obama. Essentially, he is taking Barack down with him. And he seems incapable of stepping back to understand what a terrible thing he is doing. Watch the question and answer on youtube and try again to convince yourself that soundbites are doing Rev. Wright in. Fact is, Reverend Wright in the Q and A is his own sound bite and he has done himself in. And yes, his fifteen minutes are up and he can go sit next to Al Sharpton in the green room.

Schmitty53,

Thanks for the kind words!! I just got back in town, and decided to check in on the gossip! I volunteered to help Jackpine04/Joespoon04/Servo move, and we got caught up in the bad weather/snow, etc. . . ., so I ended up "incommunicado" so to speak. Therefore Anton and "The Professor" had the stage to themselves, without my interference!! Talk to ya later.

Welcome back, roj. it was a little unsettling to us centrists to have both of our extreme voices go silent the same day. I got so worried I turned on Michael Savage for fifteen minutes just to get a daily dose of whatever it is he is peddling. He now calls himself a nationalist, which he is. Every country has a nationalist party out at the lunatic fringe so I guess it is about time for this one too.
So please quit agreeing with me and get up onto that little peach crate you store in the basement where you practice preaching like Jeremiah Wright and start dishing it out. As I said last week, it has gotten a eerily quiet in this room.
I am glad you got Joe situated in his assisted living set-up. I suspect he is lurking but he is biting his tongue. . . a good thing.

TLJ,

Thanks for the "welcome back"! Joe is doing well, but is heavily sedated as we speak/blog! It's kind of sad in a way. It's like watching "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" for the 10th time!! I'm hoping for the big Indian to come in and put a pillow over his face! He keeps yelling for the "spaghetti God" to free him from his misery! Speaking of Michael Savage, they changed his start time from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM!! Talk about getting my routine in a frenzy. I'm sure you had alot to do with that!! Now I have to listen to him when I do my three mile walk each night, and the neighbors think I've lost it (I must talk back to him or something), since I now get strange looks. I've got lots of commentary to spew about the "Rev Wrong" -vs- Barock OOOOOOObama, but the wife says I must work in the yard ASAP, or else!! Glad to be back!!

How negligent. Thanks, six-shooter, for catching this in time for me to go back to add the all important allusion to the Reverend Dr. Wright. This is a very limited and limiting topic, however, so we have to get someone creative like Mongo to give it a more universalized spin. Or we could move on. Which I wish Fox Network could also do with this ridiculous topic.
