Dan Karsnia, 34, of International Falls, won a golfing trip to Whistler, British Columbia, by being closest to the pin among six finalists in the Million Dollar Hole-In-One Contest at Falls Country Club Sunday. None of the six finalists scored a hole-in-one, which would have won a million dollar cash prize.
Arlene Helderman, a St. Norbert College junior, daughter of Allan and Patty Helderman, of the Falls, will be among 47 St. Norbert College students studying abroad during the fall semester.

Bill L’Heureux has retired from his job as oiler for Boise Cascade Corporation’s Paper Division.
40 YEARS AGO
The children and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Richards extend an invitation to all friends of the couple to attend a buffet luncheon at the Big Falls Community Building Aug. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m., in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary.
A Back-to-Class Style Show, sponsored by Stevenson’s, will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Community Building. Modeling an array of school, sports and dressy clothes will be the Timbertennial Queen, Cheryl Carrier, and Pia Einarson, Roseanne Walhaug, Patty Wood, Julie Andrusco, Barbara Ernst and Gerri Maruk.
Clark’s Park, a picnic and camping area five miles east of the Falls on Highway 11, attracted 600 tourists in July. “The 14 fireplaces, more than 14 picnic tables, the well water and the fact that the area is sprayed once a week for insects all add up to a nice place to picnic or camp,” said Lee Stone, superintendent of public works for the city. ****** Lorette is caretaker.
50 YEARS AGO
William J. Zaren, 40, was electrocuted this evening at 7:45 while working at his home on Loman Route, rural International Falls. The fatal accident occurred while he was working on an electric motor that powered a water pump at his home.
Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Hilke entertained at a family dinner Sunday for their son, Ronald, on his 16th birthday. Guests, other than members of the family, included Ernest Oberholtzer, Ranier, and Gaynard Slettvedt, Virginia.
PFC George A. Glennie recently completed a seven-week course at the non-commissioned officers academy at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He graduated in the upper one-third of his class.
Some of the winners at the Doll Show at Third Street Playground were Sandra Whitney, Lilly Ho, Janelle Sabotta, Bob Bruggeman, Randy Hess, Rex Cole, Beverly Whitney, Martha Gawtry, Peggy Rousseau and Jackie Jones. Janelle Sabotta, year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Sabotta, 800 Fourth St., was the youngest entry.
60 YEARS AGO
Among many unusual contributions to the Forest Festival committee’s “white elephant” sale is a hand-knitted doily created by a male patient at Lake Julia Sanatorium. The donor is Arthur Holmstrom, International Falls youth who has become expert at handicrafts during his long stay at the Puposky health center.
The House recently passed a bill to raise the national minimum wage from 40 cents an hour to 75 cents, as asked by President Truman.
Rev. Marshall Ek, former Falls resident now serving as associate pastor of First Congregational Church, Evanston, Ill., will conduct the 11 o’clock service in Bethlehem Church Sunday morning. His subject will be “The Life That Counts.”
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hilden, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hefner and daughter, Karen, and John Hilden, all of Rainy Lake, returned Sunday from Ulem, where they attended a reunion of the Hilden family.
