Borderland residents gave generously to area charities this season, meeting and sometimes exceeding expectations. The Salvation Army in International Falls collected more than $36,000 so far during its Red Kettle Campaign. Lt. Heather Sells said the goal was to raise $32,600.

Tanja, Carmen, Amber and Kendra Goetz announce the birth of their sister, Vanessa Ann, today. She weighed 5 pounds, 6 1/4 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.
Louise Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Johnson of International Falls, was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at the University of Minnesota Technical College-Crookston. She is a sophomore majoring in business in the Court and Conference Reporting program.

Miss Carol Stillar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Stillar, 1313 13th Ave., has completed her studies toward a bachelor of arts degree with a major in sociology and minors in psychology and Spanish at Mankato State College, Mankato.
Pfc. Walter E. Hartnell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hartnell, Liberty Addition, arrived in the Republic of Vietnam in August 1969. He is stationed at Tay Ninh as a non-combatant medic and will serve overseas 13 months.

Mrs. Nestor Pontius, Island View Route, held “open house” from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, the occasion being her Christmas gesture for friends and family.
It was raining and the temp was in the 70s when Airman First Class John Simonis left Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, on Friday. It was nine below zero when he arrived in the Falls Sunday night to visit with his mother, Mrs. Mike Lucachick, 1100 Eighth St., during the holidays.
Seaman Russell Dixon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Dixon Sr., South International Falls, is spending Christmas in a navy hospital. Dixon had the misfortune of slipping and breaking his ankle and is in the U.S. naval hospital at Pensacola, Fla.
Mrs. E.M. Foss, Island View Route, entertained at a neighborhood coffee party on Friday afternoon at her home. Christmas decorations were throughout the house. The luncheon was served cafe style.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ekman Sr., Goldville Addition, will be honored at an open house Monday in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Ten young friends helped Michael Nord celebrate his fifth birthday Friday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Nord, 813 Eighth St.
“It’s nice to have your birthday on Christmas Day.” That was the comment of Mrs. Elizabeth Reisberg, who will be celebrating her 88th birthday Sunday. The elderly but spry woman lives with her daughter, Mrs. Avis McFayden, 424 1/2 Fourth St.
In South International Falls combined birthday and Yule greetings will be extended Michael Grevich, 34; Dennis Earl Ostman, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Ostman; Mrs. John Monrean, 24; and Mrs. Harry Geving, 29.
