Alpha Rho Alpha, Rainy River Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, inducted five new members this fall. Students inducted were Melissa Walls, Chris Stone, Amanda Ogden, Scott Hanson and Mike Baade.
Former Minnesota Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett beat out football legend Bronko Nagurski and basketball star George Mikan to be named the state’s top sports figure this century, a Star Tribune of Minneapolis panel announced Saturday.

Lorrinda Graham of Big Falls and Jeannie Tveit, Ranier, are members of the Bemidji Symphony Band, which is comprised of 74 Bemidji State University students and is the principal band serving north-central Minnesota.
The International Falls Public Library has opened a Job Information Center to serve Boise Cascade employees and others affected by the termination of the Insulite operation.

40 YEARS AGO
Private First Class Charles A. Williams, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Williams of 622 12th Ave., is serving aboard the anti-submarine carrier USS Yorktown in the Northern Atlantic.
Navy Hospital Corpsman Third Class Lance E. Hardwig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hardwig of 1117 Eighth St., is serving with the Third Medical Battalion, a newly-formed Fifth Marine Expeditionary Brigade at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Mrs. Romeo Karsnia, Brown’s Corner Route, will have her son Tom and his family of five children for Christmas dinner. She was a guest at their Forest Point home for Thanksgiving.
For Christmas dinner, the Milton Thompsons shall have a houseful. Included among their guests will be her mother, a resident of Woodland Park homes; her sister, Rose Matthews and daughter, Kathy, of the Falls. Rose’s son and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Matthews of Birch Point, shall also be present. The Thompson’s two sons, Jim and Jerry, shall also enjoy dinner with their parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Meyer, 336 13th St. W., welcomed a daughter today. The daughter weighed 6 pounds and 15 ounces. She was given an appropriate name, Faith Carol Merry.
“Horse Thief Jack” Saulsbury, South International Falls, resident for 59 years, marked his 81st birthday Sunday and says he aims to live to be a hundred. He was surprised by five young friends who brought cake, cookies and candy for the occasion. The self-invited guests were Ronald Custer, 15; Joel Dahlvang, 14; Robert McDougall, 12; Kenneth Ice, 13; and Gary Graham, 13.
Job’s Daughters, Bethel 14, held their majority service for 13 at the Masonic Hall. The majority service is awarding of honorary memberships to members that have become married or have reached the age of 20. Receiving such memberships were: Mrs. David Trompeter, Mrs. Don Mason, Mrs. Duane Lenth, Mrs. Tom Riley, Mrs. Lanny Orvalla, Mrs. Richard Raboin, Carol Mitchell, Nancy Wagner, Gayle Grotte, Karin Mether, Harriet Mether, Edith Duncan and Kathleen Arney.
A number of Holler School teachers are spending Christmas in Minnesota towns. They are: Mrs. Leslie Hamalainen, Virginia; Delores Husted, Hibbing; Lorraine Thompson and Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas Worth, Bemidji; Leola Plummer, St. Paul and Elgin; and Elsie Boquist, Big Falls.

Border residents who sometimes demonstrate a rather undercover pride in living in “a real cold place” must have swelled with pride today. Early risers found the mercury here resting at the -33 mark.
New officers of Girl Scout Troop 32 are: Dorethea Hozendorf, president; Diane Couture, vice president; Katherine Helderman, secretary; and Beverly Constantine, treasurer.
Mrs. Mary Magistad has arrived from Edmonton, Alberta, for a three-month visit with her daughters, Mrs. Ed Jameson Sr., Crystal Beach, and Mrs. Ethel Bohman, Ranier. This is Mrs. Magistad’s first visit here in 18 years.
