Born to Rick and Sarah Becvar at Falls Memorial Hospital on Dec. 26 was a son, Trevor Francis Earl, weighing 10 pounds, 3.8 ounces and measuring 22 1/2 inches.
Dec. 28 marks the 25th wedding anniversary of Brian and Debbie Kittelson. They celebrated early by taking a seven-day Caribbean cruise.
25 YEARS AGO
The International Falls area’s first-ever surgeon likes hunting, fishing and horseback riding. But those aren’t the only reasons he said he’ll enjoy working here. “The facilities here are excellent, just excellent. The hospital is almost new,” said Dr. William Berg, who begins his practice Jan 2. Berg, 48, is believed to be the first surgeon ever in the area, or at least in modern times.
Richard Titus of the Falls remembers well when his daughter, Nancy, was only 15. Her goal was to fly a plane, and he watched as she climbed in and flew one by herself. His daughter, now Nancy Francis of Algonquin, Ill., is a third grade teacher in Palatine, Ill., where she has taught for six years. She hopes to be one of the teachers chosen by NASA to ride aboard the shuttle in the near future as a citizen observer.
40 YEARS AGO
Mrs. Walter (Helen) Cudmore, 42, of 1301 Third Ave., died the morning of Dec. 26 in Falls Memorial Hospital following a four-month illness.
Mrs. Emilie Majewski, 707 Ninth St., was honored on the occasion of her 85th birthday at a 1:30 p.m. luncheon given recently by her neighbor, Mrs. Sid Bangen.
Miss Vivian Sutch completed her work toward a bachelor of science degree with a major in English and Spanish at Bemidji State College at the end of fall term 1969.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent O'Leary, 1532 First Ave. E., announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathy, to John Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Larson, Porter.
50 YEARS AGO
Easy Motor Sales building, Third Avenue and 12th Street, and the Frank Schwab home, South International Falls, were destroyed in costly fires over the Christmas weekend.
Charles B. Johnson Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Johnson, Sr., 131 Riverview Boulevard, celebrated his 20th birthday Christmas Day. “He came as a Christmas gift,” his mother says. Charles is in his third quarter at Bemidji State College and is spending the holidays with his parents.
A daughter was born yesterday at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Geving, Loman Route.
A daughter was born Dec. 26 to Mr. and Mrs. James Connors, 1004 Sixth St., 7 pounds, 8 ounces.
60 YEARS AGO
A daughter was born this morning in Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James Nichols, 7 pounds, 2 ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Norris Procunier and their children, Donald and Diane, were honored last night at a surprise farewell party given in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Carew, 803 Ninth St. The Procuniers are leaving the Falls for Minneapolis where they will make their home. The now live at 1104 Eighth St. The Procuniers have lived six years in the Falls where Procunier was a foreman for the Paul Laurence Construction Company.
Dr. Mary Ghostley, who left International Falls in 1930 to become head of Lake Julia tuberculosis sanitorium, is lauded for her work in “Invited and Conquered,” a new book on tuberculosis in Minnesota.
Dick Berryman, 16-year-old son of Mrs. LaVerna Berryman, 1110 1/2 Sixth St., is a pneumonia patient in Falls Memorial Hospital.
