10 YEARS AGO
The Bronco boys swim team, led by third places in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley by senior Brent Ford, took seventh place in the Bronco Invitational held at the Falls High Natatorium.
Barney’s Restaurant, a landmark for 21 years on the local restaurant scene, is welcoming a new manager with the turn of the year. Shawn Gilbert will take over the helm from Chris Mostad just in time to help offer a New Year’s Eve prime rib special and an all-day steak and eggs special on New Year’s Day.

25 YEARS AGO
A company formed by former Insulite employees, Falls Tenco, met. Ed Cain is president and Bill Johnson vice president. Together with a handful of other mill employees they formed their own contracting company.
A former Ray resident has been selected “Firefighter of the Month” by the Kodiak, Alaska, fire department, marking the first time a volunteer with the force has received the award. Bob Himes, the son of Dale and Ethel Himes of Ray, graduated from Falls High School in 1960 and works full time as a firefighter at the Coast Guard base.

40 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Vern Valentine and daughters, Dee and Dori, of Rodeo, Calif., arrived last Saturday at the home of Mrs. Valentine’s mother, Mrs. Lillian Jornlin, 1021 Sixth St., to visit during the holidays. Saturday Mrs. Jornlin will drive them to Minneapolis where they will board an airliner for the return trip home.
A daughter was born today to Mr. and Mrs. James Kalstad.
Roast suckling pig and many other of your favorite foods and drinks at the Rex Lounge and Cafe New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Mrs. Goulet at the organ.
Dennis Vance has been elected to be chairman of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for the year 1970 and he will be assisted by Ed Schattschneider as vice president.

50 YEARS AGO
A son was born today in Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Foyt, South International Falls, 6 pounds, 2 ounces, Duane John.
Carl Freden, 55, Ericsburg, slipped and fell on an icy sidewalk in the Border City and broke his hip.
Joe Batdorf, 78, was guest of honor at a birthday party Monday evening at his home. Present for the occasion were his five children, Fred, Harry and Lavern Batdorf, Mrs. Eric Freden and Mrs. Henry Tessier. Others present included their wives and families.
Francis Robbie, well-known Border City businessman, is the new manager of Northern Lumber Yards, which currently is getting located in its new, modern building, Third Avenue and Seventh Street. C.N. Thompson is owner of the firm.

60 YEARS AGO
The Eugene Leerssens recently purchased the former Leo Dugas place near Papermakers Colony on Old Highway 11.
The Koochiching County Welfare Office said today that it had been informed by the state deputy fire marshall that the Gordon Hotel does not meet requirements for use as a rest home. The 14-room building, located on Second Street and Third Avenue, was offered to the county welfare board by Frank Keyes for rent as a rest home at $175 a month.
Mrs. Fred Leinum and son, Arvid, South International Falls, returned home Monday from Two Harbors, where they were holiday guests of Mrs. Leinum’s sister, Mrs. Martha Schiller. Two other sisters, Mrs. Archie Sandford and Mrs. J.A. Tibbetts, were also guests.
Newest social worker to join the Koochiching County Welfare Office is Miss Arlowyne Peterson, Claremont, S.D.
