The College of St. Scholastica has named 243 students to its fall semester 1999 dean’s list. Students from the Falls included Brooke Braaten, Derek Bilben, Molly Johnson and Sara Polkinghorne.
Maintenance supervisor Lynn Belanger has retired from Boise Cascade. Belanger had more than 42 years’ service with the company when he retired.

Capping off Falls High School’s Winter Sports Week, Terry Shold and Kris Mollin, both seniors, were crowned Friday afternoon during a pep fest in the high school gymnasium.
Defending the virtues of the U.S. Constitution, Falls High sophomore Jennifer McCann Friday will travel to St. Paul to compete in the State Oratorical Contest.
40 YEARS AGO
Newly promoted staff of the Rex Hotel gathered with Scott Erickson, Orr businessman and sole owner of the hotel, shortly after the announcement of the promotions Thursday. They are: Winnifred Hanson, secretary and treasurer of the corporation; Matt Smith, chef and restaurant manager; Ernie Rousseau, general manager; and Rudy Lemke, lounge manager. Fred Scoggin, who for many years was associated with the hotel, has now retired.
Ernest Oberholtzer, long-time Rainy Lake resident and nationally known conservationist and wilderness authority, was honored on his birthday recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Hilke.
Falls High School medalists at the Duluth Rotary Speech Meet over the weekend are Judy Kukuk, Joyce Randolph, Nancy Barber, Jean Sutch, Betty Millard, Roger Olson and Mitzi Naucler.
Sgt. James F. Smart, U.S. Air Force, is stationed in the Philippines and expects to be there about 15 months.

Phillip St. Pierre, owner of the Buick-Pontiac garage, died unexpectedly today. He was 52. His remains were found at about 11 a.m. in the office of his garage, 900 Third Ave.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sheehy, 849 Riverside Drive, welcomed their ninth child today with the birth of their 9-pound, 4-ounce son in La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances.
Mickey, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scholler, Golf Course Road, underwent an emergency appendectomy Tuesday afternoon in Falls Memorial Hospital.
Twenty-one-month-old Marla Rose Einarson was rushed to Duluth Saturday for medical treatment suffering from a severe case of virus flu.
60 YEARS AGO
It was 80 above Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla., as Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Vogelpohl and daughter, Jane, of the Falls boarded a north-bound airliner. It was zero when they stepped out of the ship hours later at Minneapolis.
Arthur W. Saari, 340 Third St., will represent Lincoln National Life Insurance Company in Koochiching County.
William Harala is the new operator of the Standard Service Station at the corner of Fourth Street and Third Avenue.
Daniel Waldbillig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Waldbillig, Old Highway 11, was honored recently on his third birthday. Twenty-eight children and adults attended the dinner birthday celebration.

The first 10-minute speed test was given to personal typing students by J.K. Thompson. The 10 highest net rate speeds attained by the qualifying students were as follows: Luba Karpesh, 36; Wanda Schickling, 34.8; Vernon Francis, 33; Lorraine Lyman, 31.2; Ellen Hartnell, 30; Helen Jornlin, 29.8; Patricia Sullivan, 26.9; Ellen Mandelin, 26.6; Deloris Molstre, 26; and Ava Preece, 25.5.
A shower was given for Mrs. Art Lesseman and baby boy at their home Thursday afternoon. A social afternoon was enjoyed, following by a tasty lunch served by the hostesses, Mrs. Nels Lundin and Mrs. D. Sampson.
Death last night ended 11 years of invalidism for Adolph Nyman, 63, resident of the International Falls vicinity for the last 14 years.
