10 YEARS AGO
Brent Ford will have a leg up, so to speak, on the competition when next winter’s boys swim season rolls around. The Falls High senior-to-be has been training hard the past four weeks, swimming an hour and half each day in preparation for an international meet July 17-18 at the site of next year’s Summer Olympic Games — Sydney, Australia.
The International Falls City Council recently designated Aug. 27 as Margaret Tippel day in honor of her 100th birthday.

25 YEARS AGO
In honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Vernice and John Kalstad, their children and grandchildren invite friends to an open house July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Falls Country Club.
Andy Hedlund of Ranier has filed to run in the Republican primary for the House District 3A seat.

40 YEARS AGO
The war in Vietnam has claimed the life of the 13th serviceman from Koochiching County. He is Marine PFC Bruce Carlyle Anderson, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alden Anderson, Birchdale.
On the occasion of his 40th year in dental practice, Dr. E.R. Milroy of the Falls was feted at a surprise dinner party at Rainy Lake Lodge. The stag affair was planned by friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johnson, Hilford Johnson, Julie, Danny and Dale returned Sunday following a two week vacation at their cabin at Battle Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hammond were among the 594 graduates at St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, who were awarded degrees June 13 at the spring commencement exercises.

50 YEARS AGO
Pierre Dumas Jr., 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Dumas, South International Falls, had the misfortune of breaking his right arm. While running across a board that served as a bridge across a ditch near his home he slipped and fell causing him to fracture his lower arm in two places.
Brian Toder was first place winner in the Eleventh Street Playground Talent Show; Janet Bergvall and Kathy Coran were second place winners, who accompanied their vocal selection by clapping the rhythm; and third place winner was Michael Taschuk.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Brunette and their family of 11 children moved last Friday to their year-round home at Sunset Cove which they recently purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Don Hodgdon. The Brunettes formerly resided at 1011 10th St.
Mrs. James Ingraham, formerly of Avon Apartments, now makes her home at Newport, Rainy Lake, in a cabin recently constructed by Mr. and Mrs. James Cummings. Last Saturday was moving day for Mrs. Ingraham.

60 YEARS AGO
Several neighbors gathered at the John Cullen home Wednesday evening to rake, shock and stack his hay. Mr. Cullen arrived home Wednesday of last week from Littlefork Hospital, where he had submitted to major surgery.
Miss Charlene Bohman of Ranier today began her duties as clerk-stenographer in the county treasurer’s office at the courthouse.
Evidently International Falls holds a thief with a sweet tooth. A.F. Koschak, concessionaire at the ball park, reported to police that $20 to $30 in candy bars was stolen from his storage room beneath the grandstand.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Jensen, South International Falls, entertained at a dinner Saturday evening in celebration of Mr. Jensen’s and Mrs. Ralph Miller’s birthdays.
