International Falls councilors gathered Monday to dedicate a new park bench in honor of civic activists Hermoine and Clarence Schwankl.
Marine Pfc. Robert A. Wichner, son of Donald J. and Cheryl L. Wichner of the Falls, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and was promoted to his present rank.

25 YEARS AGO
Antonio “Jack” Rizzo, who first started working at the Insulite mill in 1942, recently retired as a painter from Boise Cascade.
Marlo Coran, leadman pipefitter for the Paper Division, recently retired from Boise Cascade after working there since 1947.

40 YEARS AGO
Forty-eight “historic” students — the first graduates of Rainy River State Junior College — were called on to “leave footprints in the sand of time” by Judge J.J. Hadler, speaker at first Commencement exercises at Borderland’s new college.
Ralph Rostie, son of Mrs. Dorothy Rostie, 1902 Second Ave. W., received a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, at commencement exercises June 7.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Barnes, South International Falls, announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen Gale, to Bruno Robert Maki, Superior, Wis., son of Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Maki, Aurora.
Miss Charlynn Reuter was honored at a bridal shower in the parlors of First Lutheran Church. Assisting Miss Reuter in the opening of her gifts were Miss Kallie Welenchenko and Shelley Maki. Miss Kathy Reuter made the ribbon hat.

50 YEARS AGO
A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Hans Knutson, Island View Route, 9 pounds, 5 ounces.
Aad Tone Sr., pioneer lawyer in Koochiching County who now resides in Minneapolis, had the honor of attending University of Minnesota graduation exercises in Memorial Stadium Saturday night to see his granddaughter, Mrs. Robert (Ancy Tone) Morse receive her degree as a bachelor of law. Just 60 years ago, Mr. Tone received his similar degree from the University of Minnesota.
Mrs. David Backlund, Ericsburg, was guest of honor at a baby shower. The shower was given at the home of Mrs. Neil McCormack, 612 Seventh Ave.
Miss Christine Dock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Dock, 918 Seventh St., left Saturday to attend a five-week training course prior to accepting a position with the Braniff Airlines.

60 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Breneman of Ray are parents of a daughter born this morning in Falls Memorial Hospital. She weighed 6 pounds.
Willard Grover, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grover, South International Falls, departed for Lewiston, Idaho, where he will be the guest of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Averill, former Falls residents. Before his departure he was entertained at a family dinner in the home of another uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Grover, Carson Lupie Addition.
Mrs. Edith Noren of Minneapolis, former Falls resident, is here to visit friends and transact business. She operated The Bargain Store here until late last year.
G.N. Millard and C.E. Lindvall outlasted some 30 players last night to share top honors in the “Mob Golf” event at the International Falls Country Club.
