The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Tricia Gavin has been named a United States National Award Winner in Foreign Language.
Caleb Silvers of St. Thomas kindergarten was presented a 1993 mint Elvis stamps set by International Falls Postmaster Kirby Shofner. Silver’s winning stamp design was chosen by postal employees.

Joe (Matiski) Matuszewski has retired from his position as machinist operator for MD&W Railroad.
Fourth-grader Cynthia Strand and second-grader Karen Naland were among the top cookie sellers in the Northern Lakes Girl Scout Council.

Terry L. Kalar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kalar, 1305 First Ave. E., received a doctor of dental surgery degree June 7 at commencement exercises at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Seaman Apprentice Leon Engelking, United States Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Engelking, 919 Seventh St., is spending a 15-day leave at his parental home after receiving his basic training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.
Mrs. Roy (Lilly) Lindvall, 1000 13th Ave., will receive a registered nurse associate degree at graduation exercises Friday at Hibbing State Junior College.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rosten, 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

Here for a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Onesimo Toninato, 1100 11th Ave., is Airman second class Robert Toninato. Robert has served two years of his four-year enlistment.
Lynn Schwankl, 713 Fifth Ave., entertained guests at his 11 birthday Tuesday afternoon with a fishing trip on Rainy Lake. Guests were Paul Anderson, David Gawtry and Ronald Weum.

60 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hagel, Loman Route, are parents of a daughter born this morning in Falls Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 pounds, 2 1/2 ounces.
Did you think that it was rather chilly last night? Well, it was. In fact the mercury sank to within one degree of the freezing mark at 4 a.m. to set an all-time low.
William O. Jornlin, 55, Falls real estate man and former member of the city council, died unexpectedly at noon today. Jornlin founded the Cities Service Station at 300 Eighth St., now owned by Glennie Brothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Loff of the Falls are parents of a girl born June 7 in Falls Memorial Hospital. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces.
