10 YEARS AGO
There will be an open house in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Edward and Marjorie Kalar, Saturday, Oct. 17, 2 to 4 p.m., at Faith United Church.
If you build a better hammer, people will pound a path to your door. That’s what local inventor Jack Karsnia discovered. Karsnia recently reached an exclusive patent-license agreement with a major manufacturer for a hammer he designed.

25 YEARS AGO
A record six holes-in-one were recorded this year at the Falls Country Club. They were by Jim Davidson, Gene Juelich, Tim Anderson, Dick Hanks, Gary Lepper and Bill Blais.
The Super American Station of International Falls, Highway 53 and 14th Street, is open for business. Wayne Bahr is manager and Allan Anderson, assistant manager.

40 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mannausau, Island View Route, announce the birth of a son, Garold Adrion, on Oct. 9 in La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances.
PVT. E/2 Darel K. Hart, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hart, is serving in Vietnam with 2nd Transport Company (Med. Truck). He drives a 5-ton truck and is stationed at Que Nhon.
Students of Falls and Backus Junior High Schools crowned a queen and king at the Thursday afternoon pepfest. Crowned were Cynthia Carney and Charles Kocinski.
Promotion of John C. Ruelle, 41, to maintenance supervisor in the Insulite division of Boise Cascade was reported today by John Irby, resident engineer.

50 YEARS AGO
Joseph M. Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Owen, Goldville Addition, who enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Sept. 29, 1958, has arrived at Lackland AFB, Texas, where he will undergo his initial training.
Mary Kay Plank, 1023 Eighth St., entertained 12 seventh grade girls at a farewell party honoring Kathy Stark, their classmate. Winners at the games played were Joan Nelson, Gennifer Brown, Verna Jenson and Linda Makinen.
Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Peterson, 512 Sixth St., left today for Boulder, Colo., where they plan to spend the winter months. During his absence, City Drug Store, of which Mr. Peterson is proprietor, will be managed by C.L. (Andy) Anderson, pharmacist there for the past three years, assisted by Ronald (Red) Saurdiff, pharmacist for the past year.
Friends and relatives gathered at the Walter Lindvall home, 318 Seventh St., last evening to help Mr. Lindvall celebrate his birthday. A cake was served and the group enjoyed seeing home movies of the Lindvall’s wedding last February.

60 YEARS AGO
Dr. Morrill E. Withrow, 78, veteran International Falls physician and a community leader since he established his practice here in 1903, passed away shortly after 4 p.m. today following several months of ill health.
Mary Ann Butler, 4, celebrated her birthday Monday with four guests at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank King. Guests were Cheryl Haley, Patricia Navins, and Edward and Frances Kinports.
Mr. and Mrs. William Cole, South International Falls, are receiving congratulations on the birth of a daughter at Falls Memorial Hospital recently.
Mrs. Emil Legarie has received word that her son, T/5 George William Hayes, has been transferred by the army from Fairfield, Calif., to Great Falls, Mont.
