Nature Photography announced the local winners of its National Kids Club Portrait Contest late this summer. The local grand prize winner was Courtney Klow, “Sweet as a Rose,” daughter of Jim and Jan Klow of the Falls.
Carly Toder, 15, is one step closer to space travel. Toder, the daughter of Shelly Turner and Brian Toder, has completed Level I of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, Kan.

25 YEARS AGO
Newly installed officers of the Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teachers’ sorority, are: Marvel Blais, corresponding secretary; Kathy Gjertson, secretary; Donna Erickson, treasurer; Audrey Lucachick, president; and Kathy Perala, vice president.
Engineman-Fireman Anthony B. Dahl, son of Bertil and Marilyn Dahl of Loman, recently received a Letter of Accommodation for outstanding service from his commanding officer.

40 YEARS AGO
Airman Ronald B. Veeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Vedaa of 1726 Second Ave. E., South International Falls, has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
Mark Wold, son of Rev. and Mrs. George M. Wold, South International Falls, has enrolled at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Ill., and is a first year student.
L/Cpl. Clarence A. Helgeson, U.S. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence H. Helgeson, South International Falls, received the promotion to Lance Corporal the 1st of September.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Olson are now living at 1406 14th St., having moved from Effie on Sept. 29. They have made their home in Effie for over 21 years. Mr. Olson is with Boise Cascade Woodlands Division.

50 YEARS AGO
A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jones, 1201 First Ave. W., 7 pounds, 7 1/4 ounces.
Mrs. Sigrud Wenberg, 68, known for her many years of work in Zion Lutheran Church, died last night in the Falls Memorial Hospital.
Contestants for Homecoming king and queen at Falls High School are Dale Himes, Mark Jackson, Joan Sutherland and Diane Blais.
After 15 1/2 years with Mando, John A. Finstrom retired recently as assistant head rigger. The Finstroms plan to continue living in the Falls at their home, 323 Ninth St., for a year. Eventually they plan to move to North Dakota.

60 YEARS AGO
Two births occurred today at Falls Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hopkins, 1106 10th St., are parents of a boy. His weight was 9 pounds. Parents of a daughter are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bedard, 507 Mowat Ave., Fort Frances. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces.
Former Falls athletes Bob Murray and Joe Soboleski, first string men on the University of Minnesota, Duluth branch, are giving a good account of themselves in this season’s football play.
Neighbors met at the Richard Yaunick home. Mrs. Yaunick received some lovely gifts for her new home.
Warren Dixson, who had one of the bones in his leg broken in a recent traffic accident near the Littlefork bridge, is able to be about on crutches.
