The public is invited to a dedication in memory of the late Pat Roche at 11 a.m. Monday in honor of his contributions to the International Falls community. A new boat ramp and floatplane dock on Rainy River will be dedicated in Roche’s name.
Mike Glubka, 37, of International Falls, shot a 300-pound black bear 10 miles from Littlefork. He shot the bear from about 80 yards with a 280 Remington rifle.

Edna Simonson of International Falls left yesterday on a two-week vacation to visit her son and relatives in Superior.

40 YEARS AGO
Thursday was an extraordinary day at the J.C. Penney Company store in the Border City for the management and staff and a very special person. Mrs. James (Billie White) Phelan was working her last day after a remarkable 31 years in the Falls Penney store, made more remarkable because she had never had a sick day in those 31 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Metcalf and daughter, Cindy, of Minneapolis, were here for the Labor Day weekend visiting Mrs. Metcalf’s sisters, Mrs. Alice Burnett, Mrs. Mable Anderson, Mrs. Nellie Brown and Mrs. Shirley Thunstrom. It was their first trip here in four years.
Mr. and Mrs. Oskar Anderson and children, Louise, 11, Joleen, 9, and Billy, 6, 1604 Fourth Ave. E., have returned from a trip to the West Coast and to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota.
Bro. William L. Johnson completed his year in the novitiate at Godfrey, Ill., and on Aug. 15 took his profession of Oblate vows at a ceremony at St. Anthonyls Chapel in Alton, Ill.
50 YEARS AGO
Carol, 9-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Iraci, 420 Ninth St., was recently hospitalized with rheumatic fever. She is home now and able to be up in a wheelchair.
Mr. and Mrs. H.E. (Chick) Sandstrom were honored at a surprise party Saturday evening in honor of their 15th wedding anniversary. The party was held at their lake home.
I have taken over Nora’s Eat Shop, 403 Third St., and now serving the best possible meals at reasonable prices. Mrs. Alice Hall.
The Third Street Squirts walked off with the city playground softball championship recently with their 7-1 final win over the Eleventh Street group. Team members are: Danny Lind, Randy Gawtry, Tom Micheletti, Jeff Buchholz, Randy Ciminski, Colin Kantor, captain John Bruggeman, Leslie Ecklund and John Skrief.
60 YEARS AGO
Nineteen young boys and girls were entertained Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ludwig, 609 Fifth Ave. The occasion marked the fourth birthday of the Ludwig’s daughter, Renee.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Post, 814 Sixth St., are the parents of a 6-pound, 12-ounce son born Tuesday in Littlefork Hospital.
Three old-timers of Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company have joined the ranks of the retired. The three veterans, whose combined service with Mando is 95 years, are Bill Ward, supervisor of the pulpwood storage yard, Emilio Bernardini, beater room janitor, and Anton Rasmussen, oiler in the Insulite plant.
Alfred Frederickson, 78, veteran Mando employee who retired five years ago, died Thursday afternoon at Littlefork.
