WSI is 103 in Borderland
Winter severity index for the International Falls area was 103 on Friday, according to Frank Swendsen, area wildlife manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, International Falls Office.
The WSI was 143 last year at this date, and 107 two years ago. The average WSI for this date is about 98, Swendsen reports.
The snow depth across Koochiching County is about 14-17 inches, according to Swendsen
VNP offers night sky
Voyageurs National Park will offer a presentation on the night sky from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.
The presentation is recommended for ages 7 and up.
Participants will hear about identifying the constellations in the night sky and where or when to best view the northern lights
Kim Reich, park naturalist, will lead this family-friendly presentation.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of Voyageurs National Park. No fee or registration is required to attend.
Visitors are encouraged to come early to browse through the museum, check out the winter displays in the interactive area, and go snowshoeing or skiing.
