LAKE OF THE WOODS
Walleyes and northern pike are hitting minnows in 19 to 25 feet in the Lighthouse Gap. As the shiner minnow run continues into the Rainy River, walleye action is improving. The best reports are coming from jig and minnow anglers in 17 to 19 feet. At the Northwest Angle, a gold jig and chub is providing numbers of walleyes, perch, and crappies around Oak Island. Muskie activity also has increased at the Angle.
LEECH LAKE AREA
The ‘‘trench’’ in Steamboat Bay, Bear Island, and Walker Narrows are all kicking out good-sized perch. A jig and minnow combination is producing walleyes in 12 to 14 feet near Star Island, Little Hardwoods, Big Hardwoods, and First Duck Point. There’s an evening walleye bite with Shad Raps on the West Goose Flats as well.
RAINY LAKE
A vertically presented jig and minnow is turning walleyes on the 32- to 38-foot reefs. Walleyes and crappies can be had in Sand Bay and the American Narrows in 34 to 38 feet. Look to Black Bay for crappies in shallower water.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
Walleyes are hitting on the north-end shoreline breaks in six to eight feet. Little Stoney Point also has produced walleyes in seven to nine feet. Work Raven’s Point and Mallard Point on the west side for walleyes in six to 10 feet. A jig and minnow is now your best option. Perch and northern pike reports are limited.
BEMIDJI AREA
Walleyes are hitting minnows in 17 to 20 feet on Lake Bemidji, Cass Lake, Lake Andrusia, and Lake Plantagenet. A few muskies are hitting bucktails at night on Bemidji and Plantagenet in shallow water.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Redtails or rainbow minnows are working best for walleyes on Gull Lake and North Long Lake in 20 to 35 feet. Crappies are being found suspended on the 10- to 15-foot weedlines of most small lakes and northern pike continue to hit sucker minnows on the remaining weed edges. Bass are hitting crankbaits or spinnerbaits on most lakes in 10 to 12 feet.
GRAND MARAIS AREA
Minnows are producing walleyes on Crescent Lake in 20 to 25 feet, Homer Lake in 35 feet, Lake Saganaga in 35 to 40 feet, and on Devil’s Track Lake in 15 feet. Rainbow trout are hitting crawlers at 40 feet on Trout Lake and in 12 feet on Kimball Lake.
GRAND RAPIDS AREA
Crappie action is strong on Splithand Lake and Lake Pokegama in 20 feet and on Jay Gould Lake in 10 to 15 feet. Look for crappies and sunfish in 18 to 22 feet at Big and Little Cutfoot. Walleyes are hitting a jig and minnow on Bowstring Lake in nine feet, Trout Lake in 14 to 18 feet, Sugar Lake and Pokegama in 12 to 15 feet, and on Big Cutfoot in 12 feet.
LAKE KABETOGAMA
Anglers are hooking walleyes with minnows in 25 to 35 feet along the wind-driven shorelines. Sucker minnows are triggering northern pike over 15 to 25 feet in Daily Bay, Nebraska Bay, and Lost Bay. A few crappies have been caught, but there isn’t much consistency in the bite.
LAKE VERMILION
Bigger minnows are attracting bigger walleyes from the shallow weed edges out to deep water. Weeds and weed edges are the ticket for muskies with a variety of presentations working throughout the day.
PARK RAPIDS AREA
Walleyes continue to hit minnows on Fish Hook Lake, Upper Bottle, and Lower Bottle lakes in 24 feet of water. Northern pike also are hitting minnows in 10 feet of water on the Crow Wing Chain. Look for bluegills in eight feet of water on Fish Hook and the Crow Wing Chain.
