The Rendezvous Yacht Club has a few openings left it its New Crew Program for anyone who may like racing or just learning to sail.

The yacht club will be holding lessons Saturday and Sunday. Participants in the New Crew Program will learn the basics for sailing and racing on Rainy Lake. The New Crew Program will be conducted at La Place Rendezvous Hotel, Fort Frances.

RYC held the first race of its Saturday series on June 13 in Sand Bay.

Three boats participated in the Leo Noonan Memorial Race. After a short windward start, Eric Kaufman captaining “Lyla Maria”, a Paceship 26, took the lead over Jas Spencer aboard “Beagle”, a C&C 25.

Roger Ysen, the new skipper of the J24 “In Tune”, was forced to retire from the race due to equipment problems at the start. The two remaining sailboats rounded Campfire Island and finished near Last Island. Kaufman with crew Nettie Kaufman and Gary Saurer finished first in a corrected time of 66.29 minutes. They were followed closely by “Beagle” in 67.78 minutes. The next Saturday race will be Sand Point Island on June 27.

In Wednesday night races, Quinn McCarthy took first place on June 10 while Engberg won his third race of the season on June 17. In both races, the winner took the lead at or near the final mark rounding of an Olympic triangle course.

In the most recent contest, the lead changed several times over the first three legs of the course. Going into the last mark, Engberg’s “Wing N It” overtook McCarthy’s “Surprise” but “Surprise” was to the inside. Engberg had to give McCarthy room to maneuver at the mark, but was able to keep the lead. “Wing N It” pulled ahead and held his lead to the finish line. Close behind was Colin Hewitt’s “Ariba” who took first place for class B. The top finishers with corrected times were Engberg 21:04, Hewitt 21:23, McCarthy 21:49, and Kaufman 22:41.

Community Sail will be offered on the Tuesday evenings of July 7 and 14.
