Voyageurs National Park plans to conduct a prescribed burn today near Namakan Lake and asks the public to avoid the burn site.
The site is Tar Point near Blind Indian Narrows in Namakan Lake. The Tar Point Burn Unit contains six research plots to help determine what effect fire has on archeological artifacts. It also has two research plots to help determine the effects of fire on vegetation.
This research will assist managers in updating the park’s fire management plan, according to the National Park Service.
During prescribed fire operations, the park service asks and appreciates that recreational boaters and all park visitors avoid these sites whenever possible.
More information on prescribed fires is available at www.nps.gov/fire/public/pub_und_prescribedfire.cfm.
