Andrea Millerbernd (L-BF ’06) and the College of St. Benedict volleyball team defeated Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday to advance to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Millerbernd was named to the All-Tournament team and recorded 22 digs against the Cobbers in the regional final.
The 23rd ranked Blazers (29-6) continue their quest for a national title today against 2nd ranked Emory University (32-6) at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.
This marks the first trip to the NCAA finals for the Blazers since 1993.
Millerbernd, a libero, has played in all 35 matches and is second on the team with 491 digs (3.53/game) and 49 ace serves.
• Kelly Hams (L-BF ’08), Millerbernd’s setter with the Vikings, and the Hibbing Community College volleyball team finished third at the NJCAA National Division III volleyball tournament over the weekend in Rochester, Minn.
The fifth-seeded Cardinals won their first game over fourth-seeded Alfred State College (N.Y.) 3-1, before falling to top-seed and eventual champion Brookhaven College (Texas) 3-0. In the third-place contest, Hibbing defeated Harper College (Ill.) 3-1.
Hams finished with 101 set assists in the three matches. She also added 36 digs, nine kills, five ace serves and finished 43 of 46 from the service line.
• To finish off a trifecta of former Vikings volleyball players, Hannah Eilers (L-BF ’07) recently finished the season at Bemidji State University.
Eilers played in 40 games and finished second on the team in kills per game at 1.9 (76 total). She also had 15 blocks and 13 digs.
• Erik Moe (FHS ’03) will end his college football career Saturday when the University of North Dakota visits the University of South Dakota.
Moe appeared in six games as a redshirt freshman before playing in 12 games as a sophomore as the long snapper on field goals and extra points and as a reserve offensive lineman.
He was named to the NCC Commissioner’s honor roll as a junior and played in 11 games as the long snapper on field goals and extra points and saw time along the offensive line.
This season Moe has started all nine games, mostly at left guard.
The Fighting Sioux own the border battle with the Coyotes, which started in 1903. UND holds a 56-28-5 all-time record against USD and ended the Coyotes’ 23-game home win streak last season.
Moe’s teammate, Ty Boyle (FHS ’06), has also played in nine games and has 18 tackles (nine solo), including one sack. He’s also second on the squad with seven quarterback hurries.
• Current local men’s hockey players competing at the next level: Josh Meyers (FHS ’03) has a goal through six games at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls; Ross Johnson (FHS ’03) has two points (G, A) through seven games at the University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point; Ben Gordon (FHS ’03) has four points (2G, 2A) in seven games with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL; Jake Youso (FHS ’08) has an assist in 13 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL; Ryan Cramer (FHS ’04) is scoreless through six games at Bemidji State and Derek Fisher (FHS ’04) is scoreless through three games at Mercyhurst. Derek’s brother Drew Fisher has yet to suit up for the University of Minnesota and Brady Hjelle stopped all nine shots he faced in 20 minutes of action so far this season with the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Former FHS coach Dean Blais has the Fargo Force of the USHL in fifth place out of six teams through 14 games in the Western Division and another former FHS coach — Kevin Constantine — currently has the Houston Aeros (Minnesota Wild affiliate) in sixth place out of eight teams in the Western Division of the AHL.
