Led by a Sam Sherwood home run, the Falls High Broncos softball team improved to 10-3 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the Mesabi East Giants Thursday afternoon at the newly dedicated Falls High Softball Field.
District Superintendent Don Langan was on hand to throw out the first pitch to dedicate the field in a pregame ceremony.
“We played a smart game,” Gordon said. “We didn’t make too many defensive mistakes.”
Ariel Lagen got the start for the Broncos on the mound and went all seven innings for the victory.
Lagen gave up just one run on eight hits, striking out three in her second complete game in as many days.
Her only jam of the game in the top of the second inning when a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs.
Lagen struck out a batter in between a pair of fly outs to end the threat.
“Ariel pitched a great game,” Gordon said. “I like that she has pitched 14 solid innings for us in the past two days and is moving the ball around in the strike zone.”
Sherwood led the Broncos from the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored.
Kaitlyn Pelowski was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks while Sydney Gordon went 2-for-3. Erica Batdorf added an RBI triple in the victory.
“We had a couple of balls that were hard-hit shots,” Gordon said. “It was nice to see Sam Sherwood get some wood on the ball and hit one out of the park.”
The team enters its final weekend of the regular season and will play a road doubleheader against Cloquet and Duluth Denfeld at Wheeler Field in Duluth.
“We need our seniors to step up and that is a big thing going into the playoffs,” Gordon said.
The Broncos will learn its playoff fate on Sunday when Section 7AA holds its annual seeding meeting. See Mondays edition of The daily Journal for seeding information and more about the new ball field.
