Bronco girls sweep doubleheader

The Falls High Broncos softball team got back into the win column sweeping a doubleheader with Hibbing and Warroad here Thursday afternoon.
The Broncos won the early game against the Hibbing Bluejackets 10-1 and won the nightcap with the Warroad Warriors 8-4.
Ariel Lagen picked up the victory on the mound for the Broncos throwing a seven inning no hitter. Lagen walked three and strruck out three.
“She moved the ball around, her speeds were good and she kept them off balance,” Broncos head coach Kevin Gordon said. “It was good to see her come back and pitch strong.”
The Bluejackets scored a run in the first inning taking advantage of a pair of walks and some fielders choices.
“We gave up the run and went for the outs,” Gordon said.
Ashley Piekarski hit her second home run of the season leading the Broncos going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sam Sherwood finished 4-for-4 with a double while Courtney Scholler went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Broncos struggled early in game two against the Warriors trailing 2-1 and then 3-2 before exploding for five runs in the third inning en route to the 8-4 victory.
“We just didn’t hit the ball,” Gordon said. “Several times we left runners on base.”
Danika Stelton picked up her second win of the season for the Broncos going all seven innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and thee walks, striking out five.
Sydney Gordon led the Broncos offensively going 2-for-4 and Stelton went 2-for-3.
The Broncos (7-1) will be off today before traveling to Grand Rapids on Saturday for the Grand Rapids Tournament.
The Broncos will face the Hibbing Bluejackets, the Duluth Central Trojans and the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears in the tournament that can be heard live on BroncoRadio.com
