Off the court with Josh Mastin, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor

Seniors at Falls High School are likely counting down the days until graduation and looking forward to the future.
For senior Josh Mastin, the future includes Hibbing Community College and a chance to continue playing basketball.
Mastin’s 963 points is eighth best all-time for FHS boys and he finished his career with 211 blocks, tied for first all-time with Tim Rehn since the team started keeping blocked shots as a stat during the 1975-76 school year.
“I came up a little short on the 1,000 points and that is the only thing I regret,” Mastin said. “I asked coach Koenig to watch the films and look for another block. There weren’t any.”
Josh Koenig, Broncos head coach, has coached Mastin for the past three years and will miss his captain.
“One of the things about Josh that he brings to the court every night is a love of the game. He goes out there and he gives it his all,” Koenig said. “No matter how the game is going, he was always one of those out there that kept digging and never gave up.”
Mastin was also a starter in two positions on the 2007 Broncos football team playing wide out on offense and safety on defense.
When it comes to the two sports, Mastin said he prefers basketball.
“I have more fun playing basketball,” Mastin said. “Before a basketball game I am ready to play, I get nervous before football games.”
Like most kids in International Falls, when Mastin isn’t competing on the football field or the hardwood, he enjoys the outdoors.
“I like to hunt, fish, go out to the shack and go four wheeling,” Mastin said.
Josh is the son of Rich Mastin and Tammy Casareto.
“Neither of my parents have missed a home game in the last couple of years,” Mastin said. “When the game is done, my dad calls me and tells me how proud of me he is.”
Mastin plans to enter the law enforcement program at HCC and hopes to get recruited and play basketball at a bigger school.
