Documentary movie night set for Monday

The next documentary movie night is Monday, Nov. 24, at 6:30 p.m. It highlights films from the Vigilance Collection. The movie is “The Future of Food” and it looks at genetically altered foods, many of which are unlabeled and unregulated. Join us for the movie and discussion following. Refreshments will be provided.
Continue to encourage your children to read by modeling good reading habits yourself and by allowing them to pick out books that might interest them. If your child wants to read non-fiction about their latest interest ask someone in the junior room for titles that might fit the bill. We can help your child explore the world of animals, history, sciences, cooking, movies and more.
Check out these for a wide range of facts, pictures and fun reading. Castles Under Siege by Richard Dargie is part of a series of books about the “Age of Castles.” This title focuses on siege warfare from both sides defending and attacking. Learn about the importance of preparation to survive a siege and the why sieges aren’t common anymore. And while you are learning about sieges, pick up Stomp Rockets, Catapults, and Kaleidoscopes by Curt Gabrielson. Make your own catapult and 30 other projects for less than $1 a piece. This is a great book for a hands-on learner to discover many of the basic science concepts.
If you like books that encourage a hands-on approach then check out our new cookbooks. We have some really fun recipes including Banana Split Pizza by Heather E. Schwartz. This cookbook just covers snacks, including stained glass cookies, sweet sand and banana dogs. Then wash your hands and exercise your fingers with Easy Piano Tunes by Anthony Marks, including many folk songs and a handful of Christmas songs. Don’t forget to exercise your mind and try and write a poem or two. Pizza, Pigs and Poetry by Jack Prelutsky, the Children’s Poet Laureate, is a delightful look at language and the fun of poetry and writing from pre-emiment poet as he writes about pigeons, puppies and parrots.
Winter is getting closer and that means ice fishing can’t be too far behind. Get a jump on the fish and read Adventures with Jonny: Ice Fishing! The coolest sport on earth by Michael DiLorenzo. The book is a great introduction for parents and children about this cool weather sport. And finally for some great history A Boy Named Beckoning: the true story of Dr. Carlos Montezuma, Native American Hero by Gina Capaldi.
Teen gaming will occur three more times in 2008. Any teen in grades 7 and above is welcome to join us on Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9 from 6 to 8 and Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 3 to 7.
The library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving Day. Regular hours will resume on Friday, Nov. 28.
