Summer Reading continues but has begun to wind down.
Next Thursday, July 31, is the last day to turn in hours to qualify for a free summer reading t-shirt. Ten hours of reading and listening are needed to get a t-shirt. So, if your child hasn’t quite got their reading done, now would be a good time to encourage them to get back to it so they can qualify for a t-shirt. Turn in hours read, for books through the end of August.
Stories in the Park continue on Wednesday evenings through Aug. 13. Join us at the east end of the park at 6 p.m. for about 35-40 minutes of stories, games, songs and more. If the weather is wet, threatening to be wet or cold and windy come on into the library and enjoy stories in the comfort of the building. No matter where we meet, we’ll have fun.
Thursday, July 31, at 1 p.m. the library will hold its 4th annual Summer Reading Olympics. Kids of all ages are welcome to compete in 10 activities with treats for all who attempt all 10 activities. Fun, silly activities are planned with at least one water activity.
The summer reading picnic will be Thursday, Aug. 7, beginning at 12:30 p.m. We’ll serve hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips, Kool-Aid and ice cream. T-shirts for summer readers will begin to be distributed. We’ll set up some of the best of the summer reading games and at 2 p.m. “Sparky the Clown” will perform. Join us for a great celebration of summer reading.
Borderland Reads continues with the title Cracker by Cynthia Kadohata available for checkout. Copies are available both upstairs and down in the junior room. Check out this fantastic book and then join us on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. for a discussion of the book. Discussion is open to anyone and refreshments will be served. Cracker is a great read-aloud and is also available as a book on CD.
Teen summer reading will continue through Friday, Aug. 22. All bookmarks need to be turned in by 6 p.m., when the library closes, Friday, Aug. 22. The drawing for prizes will occur Monday morning and notification of prizewinners will occur following that. Keep reading and filling out those bookmarks.
Teen gaming is happening at the library. Tuesday, July 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. and again Aug. 12 and 26 the library will open up the meeting room and have two Playstations and one Wii available. A variety of games are available as well as board games and books. The gaming nights are open to any teen in grades 7 and above.
If you aren’t yet in seventh grade or are an adult and would like to try some of these games as well, then don’t despair. Beginning in September we will hold monthly family gaming nights to allow anyone a chance to try their hand or body at Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, or maybe Wii Sport or Play.
