Orchestra recitals
Rainy Lake Community Orchestra will feature several string musicians at an informal recital Thursday. The students are participants in the 30th annual string workshop in Ranier. The pubic is welcome to attend the short program at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Zion Lutheran Church, Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street. The final event of the workshop week is at 7 p.m. Friday at Ranier Community Building when the Youth and Adult Orchestras perform. (There will be no informal recital Friday in Ranier.) The public is welcome to attend this free concert. Refreshments will be served following the concert.
Fishing derby
The Moose Lodge has planned a fish derby for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Weigh-ins will be at Thunderbird Lodge. A potluck supper will be featured form 5 to 7 p. at the lodge. Tickets for the derby may be purchased at the lodge.

Drama workshop
The Actor’s Imagination, a drama workshop for kids, will be at Backus Community Center Monday through Friday. Directed by Jeannine Coulombe, 7 to 9 year olds participate from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 10 to 12 year olds from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Students will explore stage acting, voice and character techniques, improvisation and imagination. Registration is $30 per student; forms are available at Backus Community Center, Falls Public Library and Community Education offices in International Falls and Littlefork. The program is sponsored by Backus Community Center, Bremer Bank, Minnesota 4-H and United Way of Northeastern Minnesota. For information call Backus at 285-7225.
Fifty-Five Plus
The Fifty-Five Plus group of Evangelical Covenant Church will gather at 6 p.m. Monday for a potluck. A program by “Free Indeed,” a family singing group from Bemidji, will be featured at 7.
3-D shoot
Moonlight Archery Club will sponsor the David Kalar Memorial 3-D Shoot Saturday and Sunday. The range is located three miles east on Hwy. 11 E. (look for signs by The Roadhouse.) Registration begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. each day.
‘Serenity Sisters’
The Women’s A.A. gathering, “Serenity Sisters,” will meet at noon Friday at the Backus building, Rational Alternatives Room 101.
Fifty-Five Plus
The Fifty-Five Plus group will meet Monday at Evangelical Covenant Church, 1631 First Ave. E. Potluck will begin at 6 p.m., with the program at 7. “Free Indeed,” the family singing group from Bemidji, will be in attendance.
Pancake feed
The public is welcome to a pancake feed from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Alano Club, 410 Fifth Ave.
Elks Friday Meal
The Elks Lodge Friday Meal will be a Brat & Corn Feed from 3 to 7 p.m. Pat Porter will be featured beginning at 7.
Senior fish fry
A Senior Fish Fry is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Kerry Park. Carry outs will be available at 12:45 p.m. depending a pone supply.
Horse show
Rainy River Riders Saddle Club will host an open horse show beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Hwy. 332 arena. Lunch stand will be on the grounds. The public is welcome to attend.
Summer picnic
Koochiching Masonic Lodge No. 270 will gather for a Summer Picnic from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at City Beach Pavilion. A potluck is planned.
Fish fry
A fish fry is planned for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Moose Lodge.
Concerts at the Park
Smokin’ Joe’s will be at tonight’s Concert at Smokey Bear Park from 5 to 8:30 p.m. doing a non profit fundraiser for St. Thomas School. The public is encouraged to come out and eat before or after.
