Nicholas Starr has joined the staff of Northland Counseling Center in the International Falls office.
Starr said that his therapy approach involves helping people befriend their difficulties, so that their problems lose their strength. His areas of clinical interest and expertise include group psychotherapy, depth psychotherapy, dream work, hypnotherapy, forensic psychology, intimate partner violence, trauma and abuse, psychological evaluations, organizational dynamics and conflict resolution.
“I provide a safe place where people can embrace their pain in tolerable doses,” said Starr. “The harder you push your problems away, the stronger and more prevalent they become. The mind will find very interesting ways to put your problems right in your face until you resolve them.”
Originally from Stevens Point, Wis., Starr earned his bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, followed by his master of arts in organizational behavior from Alliant International University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology.
“Nick is going to be a real asset to the community,” said Bill Johnson, director of operations at Northland Counseling. “His skills in adult assessment and therapy complement those of others on our clinical team who do a lot of work with children and families.
“With the addition of Nick, our International Falls office now has an extremely well rounded staff of therapists capable of serving the broad range of mental health needs in Koochiching County,” Johnson added.
Starr notes that it was nature that drew him from Fresno to the Falls. The avid outdoors enthusiast says he is looking forward to becoming familiar with Rainy Lake and Rainy River and the seasons of Borderland. His hobbies include snowmobiling, outdoor photography, hunting, and all forms of fishing. The Wisconsin native has a passion for muskie fishing.
