LITTLEFORK — There’s David vs. Goliath and then there’s David’s youngest teenage son vs. Goliath.
The latter situation played itself out Friday in Littlefork-Big Falls’ 63-0 drubbing of Mesabi Academy at John Thompson Field.
The Bulldogs (0-7, 0-5 St. Louis County South) came in with only one touchdown on the season and lost by scores of 60-0, 64-0, 52-0, 47-0, 46-0 and 58-6 before Friday’s action.
“We came out good and came out pretty strong,” Vikings senior Brody Pritchard said, noting teammates didn’t take the Bulldogs lightly. “Obviously, did what we needed to do and everyone stayed healthy, so that was good.”
L-BF, the St. Louis County North champions, the No. 3 ranked team in 9-man and a shoe-in for the top seed in Section 7, piled up 333 yards on only 29 plays — an average of 11.5 yards a play — and held the Bulldogs to only 40 yards.
“We’re pretty confident,” Pritchard said. “We just have to stay sharp as a team. As long as we say as a team, we should be pretty good.”
Gage Klemetsen led the way Friday, scampering 59 yards on only six carries with four touchdowns. He also had a 48-yard punt return. Bryce Ziemba rushed five times for 119 yards and one touchdown, Justin Franz had 77 yards on seven carries and a touchdown and Aaron McGuire rushed four times for 28 yards. Mason Imhof hit Jesse Steele for a 55-yard touchdown reception to open the third quarter, and Patrick Boorman and Mitch Nelson added touchdown runs to cap the scoring.
“They didn’t seem frustrated,” Pritchard said about the Bulldogs. “They seemed happy to be out there. They were all good sports and stuff.”
The Vikings (7-0, 6-0) can cap a perfect regular season with a win Wednesday at Cherry. It won’t be easy, however, as the Tigers enter the contest 5-2 overall with a three-game win streak. Friday the trumped Babbitt-Embarrass 46-18.
“They always play us tough and we have to play them in Cherry, so it’s not going to be a cake walk,” L-BF coach Derek Bilben said.
The Section 7 seeding meeting follows Thursday morning and the Section 7 9-man tournament begins Tuesday.
