Sgt. Romarro D. Skeim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Skeim, 1223 Second Ave. E., was awarded the Army Commendation medal June 28. Sgt. Skeim leaves Germany this week after completing his two-year active service commitment.
Frank L. Simon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Simon, Loman Route, graduated June 27 from the 12-week Officer Candidate School of the Minnesota Highway Patrol at the Patrol’s training center in Arden Hills.
The “Y,” 10 miles west of the Falls at Pelland Junction, has changed hands. After 23 years and three months of ownership, Hazel and Charlie Kuttes sold the business to Roy and Mabel Howe of Loman.
Susan Rae Stone, daughter of Mrs. Norma Stone, and Raymond Stone, graduated recently from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, Duluth, receiving a registered nurse degree.
50 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. James Kirk and three daughters, who formerly resided in the Post house at 814 Sixth St., are now occupying the John Menefee house at 615 Seventh St. As soon as the Kirks’ new home on Park Avenue, Riverview, is completed they will move in there. The Menefees moved the last week in June to 102 Riverview Boulevard, the former Charles Flynn home.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Soderbaum, 808 Third St., have sold their home to Mr. and Mrs. James Phelan, Keyes building, Apt. 14. The Soderbaums will move at the end of the summer to Florida. He is taking leave of absence for reasons of health. Mrs. Bridget Fritz, who occupies half of the duplex, will continue to reside there when the Phelans take possession.
After 20 years the Smootzes, early pioneers of Rainy River district, enjoyed a family reunion at International Falls. They and their respective families were entertained Sunday at the lake cottage of Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Batdorf.
PFC Adrian Kalar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kalar, 1305 First Ave. E., arrived home from Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he has been stationed since Nov. 1, 1958.
60 YEARS AGO
A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Zimmerman, 927 Riverside Drive. She weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Whitman of Honolulu, Hawaii, were feted at a party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Bolstad, Birch Point. Mr. and Mrs. Whitman are guests of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Erle Thompson, Rainy Lake.
Mrs. Ole Rye Jr., 1239 11th Ave., submitted to major surgery in Littlefork Hospital. Her condition is reported to be good.
