Thumbs up to volunteers
Thumbs up to volunteers who help make events and programs successful. Without those who give of themselves, many programs in this community would not have found success and important causes would not be recognized.

Thumbs up to seclusion
Living in the Icebox of the Nation, hours away from larger communities, may sometimes be inconvenient, but it may help to keep the H1N1 and seasonal flu from hitting us as hard as it has hit other areas.

Thumbs up to powerful women
Thumbs up to the organizers and participants of the third annual Power of the Purse event. The United Way fund raiser, which included dinner, a keynote speaker, raffle and auctions, raised $18,200 for children in Koochiching County. The gathering of local women on the opening weekend of deer hunting season was meant to showcase the power of local women and foster camaraderie and provide entertainment.
The funds sponsored children’s initiatives, including Fruit Bucks for Kids with the Falls Hunger Coalition, the Learning Tree, a dental program called Smiles Across America and the Imagination Library.

Thumbs up to loyalty of VFW
The veterans and the auxiliary of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Club are faithfully in attendance in every instance when they are needed, as was again demonstrated Tuesday and Wednesday with their multiple appearances in several venues in honor of Veterans Day.
Veterans Day (Wednesday) is a day when we should honor them, yet we see them in uniform, out and about, performing important roles as they do always.
These women and men should not be taken for granted when we see them at dedications, parades and funerals. Many situations would be lacking decorum without them. They are the icons of what keeps our country safe and strong.
When you see the members of the VFW, thank them for what they do.

Thumbs up to flower power
Thumbs up to people who give flowers. Whether it's a friend in need, a thank you for a kind gesture, a birthday or baby, and whether they are store-bought, delivered, or picked from the side of a road, flowers brighten the day.
