Looking Back at December 11

10 YEARS AGO

Kimberlee Atchley, 11, recently cared for three baby birds orphaned a few months ago, according to June Jaksa of the Borderland Humane Society. Much like a newborn human, the birds required much attention and frequent feedings, even during the night.

A Ray man is among the 15 mushers entered in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Keith Aili, who was among the top finishers in last year’s race, will compete again this year in one of the nation’s most challenging sled-dog races.

25 YEARS AGO

Augsburg’s Mike Riley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Riley of the Falls, was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association “Player of the Week.”

Bronco swimmers Janice Gust and Tracy Buness were among 36 athletes to be selected to the All-Region VII girls’ swimming team announced last week.

40 YEARS AGO

One of the oldest residents of Falls Nursing Home, Mrs. Emma Abley, celebrated her 90th birthday today.

Airman Apprentice Tommy L. Baron, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baron, 1008 10th St., has completed Aviation Mechanical Fundamentals School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Sophomore Buzz Christensen of North Dakota was listed in seventh place in WCHA scoring going into games of last weekend. He was tied with six other players including Pete Fichuk of Minnesota. Both are former Falls skaters.

SP/4 Darwin Fish, U.S. Army, is home on a 45-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fish, and with his sister, Shelly, 16, and brothers, Duane, 13 and Darrell, 10.

50 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Art Thompson and daughter, Katherine (Kitty), 401 Seventh St., Left today for Minneapolis to make their home. Thompson has been promoted to chief cost accountant for Mando and is now stationed in Minneapolis.

A combination coffee party and stork shower honored Mrs. Ray VonderHaar Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Robert Douglas, 120 Riverview.

Mr. and Mrs. Warner J. Grandaw, 1017 Eighth St., announce the engagement of their daughter, Elvyra Catherine, to Anton (Tony) D. Munch, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Munch, Fort Frances.

The Oscar Sutherland residence, 1117 Sixth St., was damaged extensively by fire shortly before noon today. Sutherland was underneath the house, thawing a frozen water pipe with a blowtorch. His daughter, Beverly, who was on the second floor, smelled smoke and dashed outside to warn her father.

60 YEARS AGO

Janet Larson, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Larson, 515 Second St., is a patient at Northern Minnesota Hospital. Her condition was reported greatly improved today following treatment for a nose infection.

Mrs. Russell Rummel’s Girl Scout Troop 4 met in the senior high school and elected the following officers: Gloria Hodel, president; Rose Marie Engelson, vice president; Gloria Holenko, secretary; and Patricia Fearing, treasurer.

Kenneth Blanchard’s 11th birthday was celebrated with a party this evening at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blanchard.

Mr. and Mrs. Orlia Lashaw recently sold their Papermakers Colony home and furnishings to Donald Selberg. They expect to make their home in Oregon.
