Two local writers recently shared their poetry and stories at a performance at Rainy River Community College.
Kate Miller recited some of her nature poems, such as: “You Can Take the Girl Out of Minnesota, But You Can’t Take Minnesota Out of the Girl” as well as “Birch Tree.”
Miller moved the audience with a poem she dedicated to a friend who died of cancer. The words of the poem were all nouns. Not realizing its rhythm initially, Miller later found that the words fit a classical piano piece she had played since she five years old.
Someone from the crowd asked Miller: “Where is your most inspirational place?”
Miller replied, “It’s changed over the years. When I was six to eight, it was my back yard. When I was ten to twelve years old, it was my grandparents’ farm.” She added that she loves nature and that the good old Falls area was another inspirational place for her.
After intermission and refreshments, Naomi Woods took the stage and amused the crowd for the remainder of the evening.
She opened by having the crowd sway back and forth, saying different things which made them laugh. She sang a song that evolved into a verbal story and then back into a song called “Black Bear.” Woods took a break and returned as “Puma,” a poet, music writer and singer. Watching Woods’ delivery dressed in a blond wig and costume was like watching “Saturday Night Live,” said one viewer.
The event was offered to the public at no cost.
