Falls students Jonathan Patrick Gray and Angie Liedke received letters of commendation and cash prizes for placing in the statewide Minnesota ex-prisoner of war essay contest entitled “Behind Barbed Wire.”
William and Gladys Herrly of International Falls recently received the Distinguished Service Award for child foster care provider from the Minnesota Social Service Association.

25 YEARS AGO
Border Barber Shop won the City Association Bowling Tourney. Team members are Bert Aydt, Tony Aydt, Allen Helderman, Andy Anderson and Milton Reeve.
Joel Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Long, was awarded the Sparky Plaque at the recent Awana Awards Night at First Baptist Church.

40 YEARS AGO
Pvt. Robert Erickson, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry D. Erickson, Island View Route, is home on leave before reporting May 19 to Oakland, Calif., for overseas duty in South Vietnam.
Mrs. George Horness, 716 Seventh St., was on the receiving end of many good wishes for continued good health in the form of visits and gifts from her many friends and neighbors Sunday afternoon on the occasion of her 85th birthday.
Miss Roberta Curran, as vice president of Gamma Beta chapter, Sigma Delta Pi, National Spanish Honor Society at the College of St. Teresa, Winona, assisted in conducting annual initiation on April 25.
At a one o’clock luncheon Saturday, Miss Patti Lu Pavek was honored in absentia at a pre-nuptial shower in the home of Mrs. Lewis Keyes, Ranier. Assisting hostess was Mrs. Frank Larson.

Mrs. Leo LeBlanc was guest of honor at a stork shower at the home of Mrs. William Patterson, South International Falls.
New bowling champion of the Women’s City League is Holler Liquor store team. Members are Minnie Timmer, Bernie Roche, Bernice Corrin, Della Timmer and Rose Olson.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Plasky, 903 Williams Ave., Fort Frances, have announced the engagement of their eldest daughter, Marlys Ann, to Dorlyn L. Desens, son of Mrs. Eunice Desens, 318 Sixth St., International Falls.
Alex Enzmann, Koochiching County treasurer, was honored yesterday on the occasion of his birthday by courthouse employees.

60 YEARS AGO
West End Coffee Shop, 12th Avenue and Fifth Street, is opening again May 10. Lunches and confections. — Louis and Helen Prebil.
Betty Jo is the name chosen by Mr. and Mrs. John Barsy, Highway 53, for their daughter born April 26 in Littlefork Hospital.
Dr. Glenn Kimble, supervisor of Insulite research for Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company, was concluding arrangements today for moving to Savannah, Ga., where he will be superintendent of the mill technical department for the Union Bag and Paper Corporation.
Keith Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Price, is reported to be getting along well following an appendectomy.
