"It was another cold day for the golfers,”Broncos head coach Bill Mason said. “I thought the boys played pretty well and we were hoping for a first place finish but ended just one stroke back. Mesaba is normally a pretty challenging course to play and the scores indicated this."
The girls’ golf team also participated in the invite and finished in third place out of the eight team field.
Hibbing won the event with a 362, followed by Virginia with a 389 and the Broncos took third at 405. Babbitt-Embarrass was fourth with 443 and Eveleth rounded out the top five shooting a 454.
Pacing the Broncos was Maria Porter who carded a 94. The score was good enough for fifth place overall.
Katrina Blais fired a 97, Maggie West 100, Malinda Porter 116 and Kelly Blair had a 121.
"The girls shot a little higher than what we’ve been scoring the past couple of meets,” Mason said. “Again the course was playing difficult with the cold temperatures. and wet conditions".
The boys braved the cold and wet conditions again at the Wilderness Invite on Monday.
The team was split in two and took ninth and tenth place in the 26 team field.
The Broncos Team I posted a team total of 336 with Glenn Walls leading the way with a nice round of 79, Jeff Shermoen followed with an 83, Jake Youso fired an 86 and Derek Riley and Travis Phillipe each shot an 88.
The Broncos Team II was lead by Justin Mayer carding an 83, followed by Shane Dexter with Brett Musich and Ben West each posting and 84 for a team total of 335.
Virginia claimed first place posting a 320 followed by Duluth Central t 323, Hermantown with a 324, Duluth East with 326 and Duluth Denfeld rounded out the top five with a329.
Glenn Walls posted the best Broncos finished with a 79 which was sixth best overall.
"The boys were really looking forward to this meet and we are a bit disappointed with our results,” Mason said. “We have a better team than the scores indicate. The weather played a big part of it again, the kids played about three holes before the rain started and the cold temperatures made for very difficult conditions.”
The teams have one more meet in Virginia before the section tournament on MAy 19 and 20. The girls will compete at the Virginia Invite on Thursday and the boys on Friday.
"Hopefully the weather will cooperate for at least one of our meets this year and we can get some good momentum going into the section tournament,” Mason said.
