10 YEARS AGO
There will be an open house in honor of North Dakota State University graduates Tara Braaten, Doctorate of Pharmacy, and Nikki Braaten, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Saturday, May 16, at the home of Allan and Susie Braaten, 2 to 6 p.m.
Frank Sinatra, the brash, young idol who became the premier romantic balladeer of American popular music and the “chairman of the board” to millions of fans, died of a heart attack yesterday. He was 82.

25 YEARS AGO
Falls High School seniors Nancy Nuthak, Keith Ladsten and Sue Coulombe have earned the right to participate in the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C., after winning the state championship over the weekend at the University of Minnesota.
John Rolando, son of James and Mary Rolando, will participate in commencement exercises at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Abbey/University Church at St. John’s University.

40 YEARS AGO
Recently there was an Aviation Education Conference for school administrators and teachers. The conference was attend by William Wagner, a local teacher for School District 361.
Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class William J. Torseth, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Torseth Sr., 1307 Main Ave., was advanced to his present rate while serving at the Naval Air Facility, Cam Ranh By, Vietnam.
Jack Gilbertson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gilbertson, 913 Seventh St., is playing the role of Seamus O’Shaughnessy in a University Children’s Theater production, “The Puppet Prince.”
National League champions in the Women’s Bowling Association this year were the members of the Border Bowl team. They are: Doris Reeve, Ann Johnson, Pat Aydt, Carol Gustafson and Helen Virden.

50 YEARS AGO
Dean A. Boyum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence O. Boyum, 100 13th St. W., is included in the students receiving letters and special awards at Hamline University’s annual athletic awards dinner.
Sixteen little friends helped Pamela, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sullivan, South International Falls, celebrate her fourth birthday.
Mrs. Nanny Peterson, a Sunday School teacher off and on for 60 years, was honored on her 80th birthday Thursday by the Mission Circle of Mission Covenant Church.
A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. William Weum, 901 Ninth St., 6 pounds, 6 ounces.

60 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. Anton Proszek, 711 Sixth Ave., are parents of a daughter born this morning in Northern Minnesota Hospital.
Fall High School seniors Byrne L. Johnson and Robert Murray, with outstanding records for classroom and extra-curricular activity, became the 1948 selections for Mando scholarships entitling them to $2,000 to finance four years of college work.
Young Donald Miller of International Falls earned another trip to Duluth and brought more honors to himself and to the city. The 12-year-old city marble champ Saturday won the 8th district shooting title at the Lakehead City over a host of other challengers in the district playoffs.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Miller, who are leaving the Falls, will entrain tonight for Bemidji. Future plans are indefinite. Mr. Miller was with the M.D.&W. Railroad and Mrs. Miller formerly was employed in the business office of The Journal.
