The following people have been sentenced for aggravated misdemeanor or felony crimes in Koochiching County District Court.
District court news is published when made available by court staff, and news space is available.
• Merlin W. Mattson Jr., 38, St. Cloud, was sentenced July 23, 2007, for gross misdemeanor third-degree driving while intoxicated.
He was sentenced to one year jail and $3,680 fine and court costs. The jail time and $2,500 were stayed on court conditions. He was placed on two years supervised probation and ordered not to use or possess alcohol or drugs. He must submit to random tests or searches and follow the recommendations of an evaluation. He was sentenced to perform 40 hours community work service.
• Leon J. Johnson, 56, Hibbing, was sentenced June 21, 2007, for gross misdemeanor driving after cancellation of license — posing a danger to public safety.
He was sentenced to one year jail and $3,082 fine and court costs. The jail time and $2,950 were stayed on court conditions. He was placed on two years supervised probation.
• Charles G. Phillips, 58, International Falls, was sentenced July 23, 2007, for gross misdemeanor third-degree driving while intoxicated.
He was sentenced to one year jail and $3,222 fine and court costs. All but 40 days of the jail time and $1,222 was stayed on court conditions. He was placed on three years supervised probation and ordered not to use or posses alcohol or enter places that sell it. He must submit to random searches and tests and must complete the recommendations of an alcohol assessment. He was ordered to perform 75 hours community work service.
• Jeffrey S. Fifield, 28, International Falls, was sentenced Aug. 6, 2007, for gross misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.
He was sentenced to one year jail and $3,217 fine and court costs. All but 20 days and $1,217 were stayed on court conditions and he was placed on two years supervised probation. He may not use or possess alcohol or enter places that sell it. He must submit to random testing and searches and follow the recommendations of an alcohol assessment. He must perform 40 hours community work service.
• Tina M. Wehrenberg, 33, International Falls, was sentenced Aug. 6, 2007, for gross misdemeanor driving while intoxicated — refuse to submit to chemical test.
She was sentenced to one year jail and $3,217 fine and court costs. All but 20 days and $1,217 were stayed on court conditions. She was placed on two years supervised probation and ordered to follow the recommendations of an evaluation. She must perform 40 hours of community work service and may not use or posses alcohol or enter places that sell it.
