The Roseau Rams handed the Bronco baseball team there second one run loss in as many nights with a double play in the seventh inning to thwart a late rally and hold on for a 5-4 win in a game played at Gilbertson Field in Roseau Thursday afternoon.
Trailing 5-1 going into the top of the seventh, the Falls mounted a late rally which began with a pinch single by Nick Lagen. After Willie Corrin popped out, Daniel Eldien hit what looked like a double play ball to second base. But Roseau second baseman Mitch Martinson misplayed the ball and it went into right field. Lagen went to third and came home on a missed cut off throw, which also allowed Eldien to move to third base.
Adam Potter was hit by a pitch and Jake Casareto drew a walk to load the bases. Ames Bryant then hit a ground ball to third base which was misplayed sending Potter and Eldien home and Casareto to second base. Kyle Potter then drew a walk to load the bases with one out.
At that point Bronco coach Vic Heinlen reentered Matt MacKenzie into the game. MacKenzie had been the starting pitcher but had been removed in the fifth inning for Jordan Christianson. MacKenzie lifted a fly ball to medium deep left field which looked deep enough to score the runner from third. But the runner tagged up and left third before the ball was caught. The Roseau bench yelled for the left fielder to throw the ball to third base. Once the throw was made and the third baseman touched the bag, Casareto was called out to end the game.
The Rams appeared to have a solid grasp on the game when, in the bottom of the sixth, Martinson hit a bases clearing double to increase their lead to 5-1.
Martinson was Roseau’s starting pitcher while MacKenzie got the nod for the Broncos. MacKenzie had given up just two hits and had three strikeouts through the first three innings of a scoreless game.
Three consecutive hits got the Rams two runs in the fourth. The Broncos got on the board in the sixth when Casareto doubled home Eldien. But the Broncos then had runners on second and third with one out and the bases loaded with two outs but failed to score another run.
“We’ve been on the bus quite a bit the past few days,” Heinlen said. The Broncos played in wet and cold conditions in Cook Tuesday, scoring nine runs in the last two innings to win the game 15-8 but lost a one run game 4-3 to Duluth Marshall on Wednesday by giving up a run in the bottom of the seventh.
“Jake threw 116 pitches on Wednesday so he will not be available this weekend,” Heinlen said. Casareto pitched the entire game against Marshall giving up six hits and recording 2 strikeouts.Eldien and Adam Potter had two hits apiece in the game which the Broncos led 3-0 until Marshall scored a single run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to tie the game.
The Broncos had a total of six hits in the Roseau game. Eldien had two hits while Casareto, Lagen, Bryant and MacKenzie each had one.
“Dan Eldien and Chad Sohlman will be our starting pitchers for our doubleheader Saturday,” Heinlen said. THe Broncos will host BEST at 11:00 am followed by a game with the Ely Timberwolves. Both games will take place at Scheela Field .
