After many years of operating the Timberland Cafe, Ed and Bert Karasek were ready for a change. They sold the Timberland and purchased the former Pickle Barrel Pub on Highway 11 East, and have turned it into the 19th Hole.
Army Reserve Private Richard L. Gaines, son of Robert and Wilma Gaines, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kent.

Ron Nagurski, all-around Falls High School athlete, has been offered admission to St. John’s University, Collegeville, and intends to enroll the coming fall.
Forty friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Bohman gathered at their new home in Clark’s Colony Friday evening for a surprise housewarming.
Archie W. Judson has received a National Defense Education fellowship to attend the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Miss Claudia Pelland of Edmonds, Wash., arrived Sunday for a week’s visit with her grandmother, Mrs. Elmer Pelland, and other relatives in the Falls area.
50 YEARS AGO
Mrs. Walter Cudmore, Mrs. Roscoe Williams and Mrs. Carl Roberson were initiated into Koochiching Rebekah Lodge at the Thursday meeting.
Mrs. Delton Krueger was honored by Women’s Society of Christian Service of Calvary Methodist Church at the Wednesday meeting. Rev. and Mrs. Krueger will be leaving to accept a new pastorate in southern Minnesota.
Alaska will become the Union’s 49th state. The action portended the first change in boundaries of the United States since 1918 when statehood was extended to Arizona and New Mexico.
Edward Heibel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Heibel, Ranier, and Eugene Tessier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tessier, 801 1/2 Sixth St., left on the morning bus today for Minneapolis. Both young men, who graduated from Falls high school in May, have enlisted in the marine corps.

Allan Soboleski, South International Falls, celebrated his fifth birthday today by entertaining 14 friends at his home.
Mrs. John Burton returned home today from Littlefork Hospital with her infant son born June 24. Mr. and Mrs. Burton have chosen James Edward as the baby’s name.
Miss Eda Lee, 423 Fifth St., left today for LaFrenier’s Island on Rainy Lake, where she will spend a week’s vacation.
Miss Beverly Jordan, Highway 53, returned recently from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she worked for six months. While there she resided with her aunt, Mrs. Hazel O’Brien, a former Falls citizen.
Chester Wegner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darell Wegner, Ray, returned Saturday from St. Mary’s Hospital at Duluth, where he had an operation on his arm.
