Dorothy Johnson received a scholarship from the Vinland Lodge, Sons of Norway, International Falls, to attend an instrumental band camp.
She is scheduled to attend the Bemidji State University Summer MusiCamp July 13-19.
As a flutist, she is expected to study and perform during the week under Del Lyren, director of bands at BSU. Students play in small ensembles and large groups and receive private instruction from BSU music faculty. Concerts and recitals are presented at the end of the camp.
Johnson is the daughter of Willard Johnson and Bernadette Blaine. She will be a senior at Falls High School this fall. She has studied the flute since fourth grade. She studies locally with Donna Belanger, music instructor in the Falls school district. She is a member of the FHS band and was a featured soloist at the spring recital.
This is the fourth year Johnson has attended the BSU MusiCamp. Last year, she was chosen to participate in the select wind ensemble at the camp. Local music club Tuesday Musicale has previously awarded Johnson with three scholarships.
Johnson competed at the Minnesota State High School league sub-section and section/state music competition this spring. She played “Slumber Song” by R. Schumann and received a perfect score (superior rate, the highest award) for her performance.
The local Sons of Norway organization provides higher education and cultural scholarships to members or children of members to further their Norwegian heritage and language, education or music experiences.
