10 YEARS AGO
“Dancin” Dale LaBelle of Fort Frances took top honors in the Masster Basster bass fishing tournament held Saturday in Ranier.
Tom O’Connell is the newly hired Falls Country Club golf pro.

25 YEARS AGO
There was an open house July 16 in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of David and Marlene Farmer.
Steve Hobbin, 23, has joined The Daily Journal as a staff reporter.

40 YEARS AGO
Park Grocery — young beef liver, two pounds for 89 cents; tomatoes, five for 39 cents; cantaloupe, three jumbo for $1; Jeno’s plain pizza, three for $1; Arco coffee, three-pound can, $1.99.
Falls Rotarians were entertained at their regular weekly meeting by Mrs. James Rinne, 1315 Second Ave. E., who displayed household articles and told of the customs of her native country, Korea.
Esther Brunette, Cheryl Cole, Nancy Fisher, John Gust, Robert Hammond, Judith Helmer, Charlynn Reuter, Betty Rostie, Shanon Shepard and Kathlyn Weir have been included on the honor roll at St. Cloud State College.
At 2:30 a.m. Mrs. Henning Solvin of Ray was abed lying awake thinking that the USS Enterprise was due in soon and she’d hear from her son, Airman 3E Raymond Solvin, U.S. Navy. At 3:18 a.m. the phone rang in the Solvin home and a woman operator asked if she would accept charges from the USS Enterprise, 100 miles off the coast of San Francisco, Calif. She could hear her son’s voice as clearly as if he was in the next room.

50 YEARS AGO
A two-month vacation in Fairbanks, Alaska, is being enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hall, 1114 Ninth Ave.
Charles Ketola was named chairman of the board of Independent School District 361 at the board’s annual organization meeting.
Julie Manley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Manley, and Jean Frederickson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.T. Frederickson, left Saturday with Mr. Manley to attend Northern Pines Senior High Bible Camp near Fishhook Lake.
Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barthell and children, 1105 Eighth Ave., are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Barthell, Lansing, Iowa, and his sister, Mrs. J.G. Hughes and sons, Roger and Donald, Long Island, N.Y.

60 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Earl Kleppe, 1204 Main Ave., were honored Sunday evening on the 25th anniversary of their marriage.
The engagement of Marvel Louise Osell to Tony Mio, son of Eugenia Mio, 914 Ninth St., is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Osell, 612 Fifth Ave.
Angelo Gust, 1001 Ninth St., has filed with County Auditor Otis H. Gordon as a candidate for county commissioner from District 2.
Festival Queen Phyllis Sullivan is in Bemidji today as the Border City’s royal delegate to the Paul Bunyan Water Carnival.
