Falls City Council
International Falls City Council is scheduled to fill a vacant seat on the council when it meets Monday.
The Falls City Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Municipal Building.
The council is expected to appoint someone to fill the West Ward council position from people who have submitted letters of interest in the seat. Letters were received from Clarence “Swede” Sundberg, Cynthia Jaksa, and Edward Bernath.
The council seat was left vacant with the resignation of Kelly Meyers in June after he was selected in May as the city’s assistant building official. The successful candidate will fill the position until Dec. 31. The city will conduct a special election on Nov. 4 to fill the remaining two-year term of office.
In other business Monday, the council is expected to select a company to develop a comprehensive wetlands management plan for the city. The city met with two firms to review proposals. The plan will serve as the basis for policy decisions about future development within the city limits. The city has received a $30,000 grant from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources and the Department of Natural Resources to be used toward completion of the plan.
Also on Monday, the council is scheduled to hear a report on the city’s fight on blight as well as hear a report from its Economic Development Committee on airport hangar funding. The council is expected to fill a vacant seat on the Police Civil Service Commission, resulting from a recent resignation and discuss use of Smokey Bear Park in connection with the Concert in the Park series of performances.
An audience comment period is offered at the beginning of each regular council meeting, which concludes with reports of staff, councilors and the mayor.

Falls School Board
The Falls School Board is scheduled to hear from the International Falls Recreation Commission during its meeting at 5 p.m. Monday in the Falls High School cafeteria.
Also during the meeting, the board is scheduled to hear an administrative report from Kevin Grover, assistant to the superintendent. Grover is also expected to review the date for graduation. Several students missed graduation in May as a result of a sports scheduling conflict.
The board is expected to close grades five, six, seven, 10 and 12 to open enrollment for the 2008-09 school year based on current class enrollment projections.
The board is also expected to hire Michelle Holbeck as an elementary teacher, Angela Schwartz as a secondary English teacher and Rosa Christenson as a Spanish and English as a second language teacher.

Ranier City Council
The Ranier City Council Monday is scheduled to hear an update from trustees who attended a recent meeting with CN Railroad officials.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Ranier Community Building.
Also on Monday’s agenda is the appointment of election judges.
Other business will include proposed appointments of Mayor Ed Oerichbauer and Trustee Dan Klocek to a committee that will include representatives of all cities within Koochiching County. The committee is being formed by the Koochiching Economic Development Authority.
The council will also consider an agreement with the Arrowhead Regional Development Center to help the city create a vision plan.
A request to allow Koochiching County Soil and Water Conservation District to use the Community at no charge to for a tour luncheon is also expected to be considered.
