Aitken elected as next bishop, By FAYE WHITBECK, Staff Writer

Rev. Thomas Aitken was elected Sunday to a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
He was elected on the fifth ballot with 254 of the 408 ballots cast by voting members to the annual Synod Assembly at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

Local pastor nominated for bishop position, By LISA KACZKE, Staff Writer

Rev. Tom Aitken is being considered for the position of bishop of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The Northeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly will conduct an election for bishop this weekend in Duluth.
Aitken is the pastor at First Lutheran Church in International Falls and Bethany Lutheran Church in Loman.


Special Assembly Day of Jehovah’s Witnesses staged

The Special Assembly Day of Jehovah’s Witnesses was conducted April 19 at Bemidji High School auditorium, Bemidji.
Delegates from the local International Falls congregation were among the 821 in attendance for a program composed of talks, interviews and experiences.
The theme, “We Are the Clay — Jehovah Is Our Potter,” was based on Isaiah 64:8. The Scriptural admonition provided by means of this program increased our appreciation for the Great Potter’s wisdom, justice, power and love.


Zion circle meetings set

The following May circle meetings have been scheduled for the Women of Zion Lutheran Church.
Altar Circle will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday for dinner at Barney’s Family Restaurant. Bible Study will be at 6:30 at Zion in the Fireside Room.
Tabitha Circle will gather at 5 p.m. May 5. Joan Myer will be the hostess. Diane Semmler will be the Study Leader.
Sarah Circle meets at 1:30 p.m. May 6 with Marcia Bringedahl and Johanne Moe as hostesses. Study will be lead by the group.
Martha Circle gathers at 1:30 p.m. May 7 with Helen Weum as hostess. Study will be lead by the group.

Knights of Columbus Council 1540 meets

Knights of Columbus Council 1540, St. Thomas Church, reminds the public of the annual Tootsie Roll Drive April 25-27. All donations are to aid people with developmental disabilities. Parishioners at St. Thomas Church donated $502.91 to the area food shelf which was matched by a donation of $500 by the Knights of Columbus.
The Youth Mission Trip to Mexico in June with Bro. Tony Ortiz was also given $1,000 by Council 1540.
A discussion was conducted about the success of the Lenten fish fries.
A committee was formed for the nomination of new officers.
